Soon as we got in our room the door stuck behind us and we could not get out. Lock plate was bent and door wouldn't open even when unlocked. Almost had to break the door down, finally got out and went to front desk. Clerk gave us a screwdriver to try and fix it and said maintenance wouldn't be here till morning to change locks. It was not repairable, as screws were stripped. Had to sleep the whole night with door slightly ajar and safety latch across. Pretty sure this is a safety code violation as we couldn't leave room unattended, and we couldn't close door to sleep because in the event of a fire we would not be able to get out. The clerk was sympathetic and assured us that we would be given a discount at checkout for the night. When I went to checkout (at 11am checkout time) he was not there, and there was a sign saying back in 20 min. I waited and a female clerk and older woman (presumably the manager) came off the elevator. Manager said "do you want something?" in an annoyed manner. I told her I just wanted to check out. She said "she'll help you in a minute" as if I was a bother to her, gesturing toward the clerk. I gave the clerk the key card and she quoted me full price. I let her know the other clerk promised us a discounted rate. The manager overheard and came over almost angry, demanding to know what the problem was and who said that. She spoke angrily at the clerk for a bit, the clerk looked frightened of her, then she said "give 'em 20$ off" and stormed away. Another guest witnessed the whole thing and shot me a look saying "maybe I should not stay here"?!
Unfortunately $20 does not compensate for anything when you're looking at a $630 bill. In hindsight we should have just alerted the fire marshall.
Aside from the unkept promises and the nightmare manager-woman, the hotel room was filthy (stained carpets, grimy bathtub not even wiped, broken mirror in bedroom, etc.) . The pool area was very dark and unsafe as adults using waterslide came shooting out into pool where small children swimming, and could barely be seen in extremely dim lighting. The room we booked specifically because it had a kitchenette, but the dishes and cookware was filthy - and no wonder because there was no dishsoap, dishcloths or even paper towel. I phone down to the front desk for some, and the clerk showed up 30 min. later with some facecloths and said "this is all I could find". No dishsoap though, so we had to go to the store to buy our own so that we could wash their dishes.
AVOID STAYING HERE!!! The Sandman Inn across the street is waaay better (we stayed there a few years ago) and the same price. Unfortunately they didn't have a...
Read moreBeginning of the experience was bad. When I was making the reservation I saw the hotel info said it is pet friendly. Nothing was saying about specific rooms. Beige before I confirmed the reservation, I called the hotel asking if I had to inform somewhere in the reservation that I needed a dog friendly room. The guy said "no. Only when you check-in, let us know u have a dog, and you will be charged $20 per night per dog". Fair enough. However, when I arrived, I informed about the dog but the receptionist refused to let me check in to the room I reserved because I reserved the family room and family room is located on 3rd floor. Dogs are only allowed at the 2nd floor. She showed me the written policy and offered me to accommodated me and my family on a standard room with an extra bed at a $10 charge per night. At the end was not to bad. It saved me $250 in total because the standard room price was less than the family room. I was really frustrated but the receptionist was still very friendly and tried to help me. About the hotel. It has a really nice swimming pool indoor with slide. Great to keep kids busy with some fun. Rooms are fairly well maintained. Prince is not too bad. Good location near major trails and hiking spots and there is a Walmart on walking distance. Friendly staff. Standard room was a bit tight but good enough to accommodate a family of 4 and a dog crate between the...
Read moreDespite some bumpy check in confusion, a solid option for Squamish accommodation. Be ready for a "cash on the barrel head" approach including damage deposit up front along with confusion around third party bookings. However, with this stated, the hotel did honour all aspects of their contract, returning our damage deposit as promised. The bones of this hotel are solid, with large rooms and (with some needed tweaks) a working air conditioner and amenities including working water slide. They do allow pets, and we had a few extra hairs on our socks but the sheets, towels, washrooms were squeaky clean, the staff work very hard to keep the facility up. As avid mountain bikers, they made it easy for us to keep our bikes secure which is very much appreciated. What is important to realize, is that these folks are an independent operator amongst a tight set of other chains of hotels and do make the effort to run a clean, functional, hotel that welcomes many trades or professional clientele. Considering how challenging it is to find a reasonable accommodation option in Squamish, the Mountain Retreat is a good option...
