The beer is most often very high quality. They make small batches of many varieties that are almost always delicious. The pizza is above average from our experience of 5 or 6 different pizzas at Backcountry. Decor and the space are quite charming and fit well with the name and branding. However, where we have struggled with Backcountry has been consistently poor service, from multiple servers over multiple visits. As people who greatly enjoy connecting, laughing with, and building good rapport with our servers, we have continued to miss this at backcountry. Instead, we feel treated with contempt, as if asking a simple question is an annoyance. For example, we visited on July 1st and were served by Max. We asked for a paper menu, which apparently backcountry doesn’t have. Here’s the thing though - that’s fine! We don’t mind, we wanted to ask because we enjoy them and prefer not to use our phones at restaurants. However, instead of simply and politely responding, we were grilled with such questions as “don’t you have phones” and “why do you need one?” With condescending and disrespectful tone. Later, a member of our party asked innocently if two of our tables pizzas could be half and halved for two guys splitting two different flavoured pizzas. Once again, not a problem at all if that’s not possible for any reason, but we are a customer paying an establishment for service and feel that asking should never be a sin. However, the servers response was along the lines of a snappy, angry faced “NOO WE’RE NOT GOING TO DO THAT THE KITCHEN IS SO BUSY”. His attitude felt like he was trying to punish us for asking two questions. (Yes, these are the only two things we asked besides general “water please” type asks.. it’s not like we were the table from hell we just wanted to have a nice pizza and cool beer.) In summary, backcountry seems to have a culture where management allows staff to treat customers like they are always wrong, and are a burden unless they simply sit down, shut up, point at the beer they want on their phone, and leave ask quickly as possible. We will not be returning to backcountry sadly as we find their beer quite exceptional but can not overlook the...
Read moreGirlfriend and I arrive to the taproom and see it says "please wait to be seated." That's okay! We waited and a server walked us to us, no greeting. We all stand there until I finally ask for a table for two. The server gestures vaguely to a table. We sit down and are not offered a menu or informed about the digital menus.
While we're sitting, we hear some pretty rude and aggressive service from servers at tables around us. It doesn't feel like a friendly or welcoming place but oh well, we wanted drinks and figured it would be fine.
Now we are ready to order. My girlfriend greets our server very politely but they don't respond. The server just asks what we want. She orders a flight, I order a red wine, and we decide to split a pizza. She's vegetarian and lactose intolerant, so we get the Sauce Boss with the mozzarella subbed out for vegan cheese.
The drinks come. We love them! My girlfriend was really happy with the cherry cola sour and strawberry creamsicle sour. She bought a mixed 4 pack to take home to Vancouver!
The pizza comes. Looks good! I take a slice and take a nice warm bite. To my HORROR there is a slice of salami on my pizza! Good thing I am not a vegetarian is all I thought about it. My girlfriend was horrified and checked the menu to see if we had accidentally gotten something with pork. We had not! My friends, there was a random piece of pork on our vegetarian pizza, BELOW the cheese. I have already consumed the offensive slice by this time, so we can't really bring it up to the server. My girlfriend asks me to thoroughly check the remaining slices for evidence of a pig. She's a little disgusted and just picks at the pizza. It wasn't worth $22 even without the surprise salami, by the way. How does a slice of salami just fall onto a vegetarian pizza? Ew!
The rest of the visit, the servers continue to be rude and we're pretty much rushed out as soon as the drinks are finished. Worst part, the POS system made us leave a tip. Now, normally I tip even for mediocre service but this place did not deserve it at all.
Next time we're skipping the food and shitty service and just buying a 4 pack and then going to the...
Read moreBackcountry Brewing is easily one of the best craft breweries. From the moment you walk in, the cozy, welcoming atmosphere draws you in and makes you want to stay for hours - the vibe is laid-back, inviting, and just right for enjoying some truly world-class beer.
One of the biggest standouts of Backcountry is their exceptional customer service. I’ve communicated with Marc for inquiries about their products, both via email and in person at the brewery, and every interaction has been professional, friendly, and incredibly helpful. Marc goes above and beyond to make sure every question is answered thoroughly and with genuine enthusiasm. It’s clear he—and the whole team—genuinely care about the customer experience.
As for the beer, it’s next level. Whether you’re a fan of hazy IPAs, rich stouts, tart and refreshing sours, or something in between, Backcountry delivers exactly what’s promised in every description. Their beers are bold, packed with flavor, and leave you wanting to try the entire lineup. It’s clear they put real thought and passion into every brew.
I highly recommend trying the pizzas, they are phenomenal. But honestly, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Every dish is crafted with care, high-quality ingredients, and flavors that pair perfectly with the beer offerings. It’s the kind of place where you order one thing, love it, and immediately want to try three more.
Whether you’re a local or just passing through Squamish, Backcountry Brewing is an absolute must-visit. Between the unforgettable beers, outstanding food, warm atmosphere, and incredible service, you’ll find yourself coming back again and again.
