From the very first communication to our unfortunate departure, Penny's Motel was perfection in every way! |Several days leading up to our check in, we received texts in anticipation of our arrival. We were made to feel like we were returning to see old friends, rather than a first visit.|Check in was seamless. We were sent a code to unlock our door the morning of our arrival and an invitation to get settled before going to say hello to the staff at Apres. We had spent the day at Scandinave, so, our first order of business was to take a nap. We wandered over to find Apres absolutely hopping with the locals enjoying the amazing cocktails and great food. |We sat in the heated outdoor bar where Ethan and Deb, the bartenders, took great care of us. We simply moved inside when there was room. It was chilly out there, but it was made cozy with fur mats on the seats and warm blankets to wrap yourself in. |Saturday morning, we went to Thornbury Bakery Cafe for breakfast. The food was delish! After a jaunt to Collingwood, we returned to Penny's to relax. I had texted Catherine, the GM, for extra supplies like water bottles and body wash. When we returned, she came to our door, supplies in hand. We had a lovely chat and an instant connection. She is an absolute doll! |Ice storms in the area brought power outages that affected Penny's too. Luckily, before we left for dinner, it was back on so we enjoyed a pre dinner cocktail. Catherine joined us at the bar and treated me to a birthday drink. A lovely gesture! Before we left for dinner, I tasked Ethan with a signature cocktail, not on the menu. We went to Tremont Cafe in Collingwood, our absolute favourite restaurant. When we returned, Ethan's cocktail did not disappoint! |Sadly, there was another power failure during the night and the power was still out this morning. We decided to get on the road early. |Closing the door behind us, we sent the text to let Catherine know we were checking out and away we went. |Penny's will be our place to stay any time we are in the area in the future! We will see you...
Read moreAn affordable and practical accomodation right on Highway 26 in Thornbury. An ideal option for fishermen, those with work nearby or tourists. Close to Blue Mountain Ski Resort, Blue Mountain Village, Georgian Trails, Thornbury Fish ladder, Thornbury Cidery, the local pubs and beaches. The staff is very respectful and well known in the community. The wifi connection got slow for a few minutes and to my surprise the Owner was happy to help and fixed it immediately!
This is my go-to Motel in the area and has other return customers - mostly work crews, cyclist couples, and fishermen who have said the same. I have most recently stayed here for over a month to take advantage of seasonal opportunities in the area and have met many of these return guests. Great people. I have even managed to find a bit of additional work because of it!
I decided to write this review because the owner and his wife are just wonderful. Also, I overheard a disagreement earlier this morning and someone who stayed here threatened to write a negative review if a deposit was not refunded after staying here for 2 nights. They clearly said that they would write a review insisting that this place "had bedbugs" if they were not refunded for one day's stay after staying two nights because they wanted to leave a day early. I came online to check for myself and sure enough, they did.
All of this over a day? Come on guys.. I have been here for over a month and can confirm there are absolutely no bedbugs here. If there were.. Why would you stay two nights without making a peep? I'll tell you right now, nobody in their right mind would risk that - and if I saw even one I would have never come back.
Great staff, great location, clean rooms, awesome guests,...
Read moreMy husband and I stayed at the newly renovated Penny’s motel for 3 nights and absolutely loved it.
The staff greeted us as soon as we got there and it felt like we had just arrived at a friend’s place because of how welcoming and laid back they were. Having just opened they gave us a tour of the grounds and we were so excited to spend the next few days there.
Our Queen room was everything we were going to need for our stay. The decor, attention to detail and complimentary bar kit were great. My favourite touch was the heated tiles in the bathroom. These are going to be great especially during a winter stay.
The grounds of the motel are Instagram worthy throwback to nostalgia with a bocce court, corn hole game, communal gas fire pit with muskoka chairs and the atmosphere is topped off at night with some awesome music and string lights. During our stay we met some awesome people from couples to families, it really is for everyone.
The hotel is a short walk to Bayview Park which has a great beach and provides an awesome spot to watch the sunset. Across the street from the hotel is Thornbury Cider house and just a short walk further is Thornbury’s main strip which has some awesome restaurants and fantastic coffee spots. Penny’s also has a few complementary bikes which we took out often to explore the area. There is even a waterfront trail that connects Thornbury to neighbouring towns all along Georgian Bay.
Their modern patio and restaurant promises to be the new place to be in town and we can’t wait to come back once it’s opened. Congrats to the owners and team at Penny’s, you’ve really created something great! Can’t wait...
