Booked a private room with a female friend because of the many good reviews. Initially booked for one day and on arrival we were asked to confirm before the evening if we would be staying a second night. After having a chance to look around town briefly, we decided we would not stay and informed the pleasant British woman that was working there. We did need to use the computers to find ourselves a hostal for the next destination and it was only available in the main house (rooms at this hostel are in two separate building a one minute walk apart from each other) and only until 11pm. We were heading out for dinner, but the woman working there assured us that as long as we arrived before 11pm, it would be no problem for us to keep using the computer until after that time.
When we arrived at the main house after dinner at 10:30pm, the door was locked, so we rang the doorbell. A short, dark haired woman with a French accent appeared and asked what we wanted. We explained that we were there to use the computer, but she said it was too late in the night for that. We tried to explain what the other woman had told us, but she would not listen and was quite rude in her mannerism. Among other things, she accussed us of having cancelled a reservation on little notice (absolutely not true), of being aggressive (it seems she took my foot being up one step as we were standing talking to her on the front steps as a sign of aggression) and just seemed to have misunderstanding after misunderstanding. Unfortunately, it turned out that she was the part owner of the hostal, so we had nobody else to turn to. Amazingly, she would not even let us in and allow us to use the computer until 11pm, the normal time posted on the wall.
We went back to our own building and out of our frustration explained what had just happened to the other hostal guests. An American woman who was staying there told us about a similar experience with the same woman earlier that day. Clearly, there was a pattern here. As I am Canadian and my accent likely indistinguishable from an American accent for someone who's not a native speaker, we couldn't help but wonder if there was some sort of anti-American sentiment at play here by this French woman.
The next day, we packed up and went to the main house and saw the British woman again and explained the whole encounter from the night before. We explained it in enough detail that it should have been clear for anyone over-hearing that we clearly had not done anything wrong and that the accusations by the French lady clearly mistaken. To our surprise, the French woman appeared in the room and said she had been listening to the whole conversation, and rather than offer an apology, she started to yell at us and continue the same nonesense as before. The rest of the exhange went downhill quickly, shockingly ending with her demanding that we leave the hostal immediately (we were packed and just needed to use the computer) or that she would call the police! It became quite obvious to us and the British woman who worked there that we were not the issue and that this woman was suffering from some sort of mental issue at the time. We obviously got our bags and left immediately, but this horrible experience was one that we felt we must share. The hostal itself is nice, and there are good things about it, but nothing could possibly make up for a host who's that unhospitable and...
Read moreWe were just coming off 12 days driving & camping on the Carretera Austral and had a 1 night stop over in Puerto Varas. Simply excited by the prospect of any hot shower and a bed, we were in awe as soon as we walked into Mapatagonia. The building is beautiful- tall, wooden ceilings, big cozy beds with fluffy comforters, amazing touches on the women's bathroom (with a hair dryer!), cozy, communal spaces with a wood oven, great wifi, a spotless, well stocked kitchen with tons of communal dishes and pots & pans. The staff was super friendly & helpful (Lisa was so wonderful!) and they were able to accommodate our tight schedule of getting laundry done within 6 hours. The entire hostel feels like you are staying in someone's immaculate, clean, cozy home. Pierre also operates guided outdoor adventures. The location is great- 5 minute walk to town & a supermarket, maybe 10 minutes to the lake. If you are in Puerto Varas, don't stay anywhere else! Thanks for the...
Read moreMapatagonia is a very different hostel to most. It is so spacious, extremely clean, great facilities and most importantly, best staff ever! Pierre and Eileen were so extremely kind and caring. They would always make sure we have the best time no matter the weather. We did the volcano tour with Pierre which was absolutely amazing, where you had an option to cycle down. We also did a hike to Petrohue and Eileen explained everything so well, we were able to do it unguided. We also did rafting, which was so convenient as they picked us up from the hostel and back. Everything is so seamless. The bathroom is absolutely amazing, so clean and very beautiful; one of the best I've seen. The mattresses were also SO incredibly comfortable. Pierre always gave us food recommendations, and made sure we had the best stay, regardless of where we went in Puerto Varas. It truly felt like a family home. (PS they have a wide array of entertainment and movies and the best...
