Would recommend to anyone who goes to Chengdu, given that they wont mind staying at a hostel, not a hotel. The hostel is located north of the city centre but close enough that getting to the city centre doesnt feel like a hassle. The personnel speak really good english and are very service minded. They are obviously used to having western guests and are very accommodating. Rooms and bedsheets were clean. ||||Check-in experience was the best I've ever had - better than any luxury hotels I've stayed at. I arrived with my wife and we're in our early 30s looking for local sights and experiences like sichuan food and seeing the pandas. The first thing they hand us is their own map of city which is quite standard. Then they give us a hand-drawn map of the neighbourhood with recommended restaurants other necessary information like ATMs, pharmacies, subway stops and such. Amazing! Then they hand us a menu of activities: both what activities the hostel arranges on-site (hot-pot night, dumpling night, Mahjong class, karaoke) and third-party activities like going to the Panda Centre, hiking, food tours, cooking classes.||||Our check-in resulted in that we booked a walking food tour, trip to the panda centre and signed up for a Mahjong class the next night at the hotel. Our entire itinerary could be decided on and booked during check in! Basically we said to them that we wanted to do X and Y on days A and B and they fixed the rest.||||But the BEST part of it all was the Mahjong class which was held by the Ayis (the employed maidens) who spoke zero english. They taught us the game and rules with hand gestures and physically showing us how to move and arrange the tiles. We even learned strategies from them without be able to speak to each other! ||||TL:DR - perfect for people who want to experience local culture and get great service from people who understands westerners' needs when...
Read moreOn our first evening we were told the kitchen was open when it was actually shut, so after a long day of travelling we settled down to order from the menu to be told less than 5 minutes later it was actually shut. By this point, nothing very appetising was open nearby. |The bathrooms don’t get cleaned often enough but the toilets are separate from the showers so it’s not “wet room style” which is much better compared to other hostels we’ve stayed in in China. |We booked a night at the Opera and our guide forgot to pick us up so we had to reschedule for the following day and miss hot pot night with our friends. On that note - our friends arrived having booked a double room and there was only a twin room left so they were really annoyed.|There was trouble with the hot water whilst we were there too which meant we had freezing cold showers on our first day. Having said all of this, the receptionist was so lovely and we would come back just to visit her!! The place is cosy and quiet and very cheap which is great, however the problems we had were a...
Read moreWe arrived to this hostel after a long train journey from Xining. As we arrived at midday many other guests were checking out so we had to wait to check in. Consequently the staff upgraded us from a dorm room to a double room for the same price. The hostel staff are very helpful and the atmosphere is great. They offer a wide selection of food and beverages all at a reasonable price. |The hostel offer several tours but don’t advertise how to get to attractions using public transport. For example to go to the panda reserve, there are several public buses which run and the entrance fee is 58 yen. |The hostel also runs several activities; a different one every day. The dumpling party was good fun but the veggie dumplings were not kept separate. I enjoyed the oil painting session, all paint and brushes were and it was free. |The bar is good and the hostel showed the football World Cup. The location is also good, close to a local market, Walmart and monastery. I would definitely...
