I was very excited about my first visit to this fabled city and was thrilled that the China Eastern flight from SFO to my final destination of ChiangmaiTHAILAND included a 17-hour layover (20-21SEP2018) in Shanghai. Being a life member of HI-AYH means starting there for overnights. Despite the fact that there are numerous hostels/B&Bs/other more expensive accommodations, Etour popped up as the most reasonable considering the (short)length of time I’d be there. |My specific activity was to ride the World-famous MAGLEV, a comparatively quite expensive (200rmb)for a fast, quiet & spacious transit. At the beginning (PVG airport) to its other terminus, it was most impressive.|However, I then shifted to the inexpensive & extremely crowded Metro (green line.#2), following the posted Etour directions. Yes, I was jet-lagged and missed the stop (People’s Park), but I was able to call the 5-star reception and backtrack. Once at the correct station, I needed to exit at #11–a heck of a long walk through this busy, crowded, commercial bazaar. |According to the site info, as soon as I walked through the doors, I’d be facing a Ultra-modern Marriott hotel, which was quite correct. But, it was still challenging for me—I do not hesitate to state that I am a “digital dinosaur”, which translates to someone uncomfortable holding this new 8+ (or any smart phone!), staring at the screen and dangerously ignoring immediate hazards.|Anyway, With intermittent rainfall from a gloomy & dark night, manipulating the map/find features, I miraculously found this hidden hostel, tucked behind another building in an alley. The single best feature was seeing a well-lit, World wide recognizable hostel symbol above the door. Relief flooded my exhausted body— and I was SO GLAD to have made reservations in a 6-person dorm; this 5-star reception used enough English not only to give me directions when I got lost, but also show me where room 223 was. |Except I wasn’t paying attention.|I hobbled down the walkway, into a lovely common/open/smoking area, through the kitchen to the 100 rooms. Obviously, go up one floor. Sadly, my room was not there, so I backtracked, passing the small eatery/bar and up another set of stairs. I continued along the walkway, through the clothes washing station, up another short flight of stairs to the room—and my keycard easily beeped me in. |Things got ugly; one if the dormers was smoking. I immediately let him know how completely UNACCEPTABLE that was in non-smoking areas (showing DISapproval is just as universal as showing approval!) and he quickly complied. A shirt time later, he was about to light up another fag, I emphatically let him know he needed to get out, which he did. Too bad he didn’t take his keycard with him—I had to let him back in when he frantically knocked.|I could have reported his inappropriate behavior, but that would have meant me going all the way back to reception—and returning, too. I simply needed to lay down & rest, and as long as the smoker left the room to smoke, I was OK with it. |Thus is a very decent, inexpensive, short term stay (in the dorms). Reception is 5-star, but location & directions are poor(3-star). If you overnight here, go out door #11, see the Mariott and walk to it. This hostel is across the street from the Marriott, tucked into a...
Read moreMy husband and I stayed at this hostel for once at the times. I decided to stay in this hostel because of its strategic location, close to People's Square. Unfortunately, this hostel is quite expensive compared with the facilities obtained. The bed is far less than neat, maybe not even cleaned properly. In-room sightings are very ordinary and nothing special. Shared bathroom is not clean enough, but pretty good rather than can not make a bathe. Bath towels and small towels are provided. As well with sandals in the room. We have to take our own toiletries. Toilet is also not too clean, because it depends on the guest who use it. They do not have personnel to clean up the toilets or showers at any time. If you want to cook, they provided pantry to borrow rice cooker, dishes, spoons and more. There is a cafe in the hangout area, but the price is quite expensive to me. I did not make an order at the cafe. Its strategic place may be the only mainstay for the hostel to provide a high enough price compared to the facilities they provide. Fortunately the receptionist can speak a little English that can help our communication, especially when going to...
Read moreStayed there for a week last September with my family. It's a budget-friendly hostel with an exceptional location! It's a walking distance away from the subway, People's square, restaurants, shopping districts, etc. However, the room, amenities, facilities are old and the sheets were not clean. ㅜㅜ The employees were not accommodating even though they are working in the hospitality industry. I asked for a towel and luggage storage but it seemed that they did not want to be bothered by my question. I hope they can improve the facilities and employees' attitude because the hostel has a really good location. If they improve both, then maybe there will be more HAPPY guests in the future. Just...
