I recently stayed at the Hyatt Centric Zhongshan Park Shanghai, and to my surprise, it turned out to be a fantastic experience! Initially, I just wanted a hotel with a convenient location and stylish design for a night, but everything from the restaurant to the room exceeded my expectations. If you’re also someone who values the overall hotel experience, this place is definitely worth considering. Let me share some highlights with you!||The Restaurant: Full of Surprises, Breakfast Deserves All the Praise||First, let’s talk about the restaurant—it completely blew me away. The design cleverly balances depth and natural lighting, creating a cozy yet sophisticated ambiance. Whether it’s basking in the morning sunlight during breakfast or enjoying the warm, soft lighting at night, the thoughtful details really stand out.||The breakfast, in particular, is nothing short of exceptional. The quality of the ingredients and attention to detail rival what you’d expect at an Andaz property. The variety includes a great mix of Chinese and Western options: exquisite dim sum on one hand and perfectly cooked eggs and freshly baked bread on the other. Even the fruit is beautifully presented and incredibly fresh. Honestly, just for the breakfast and restaurant experience, I’d happily choose this hotel over many other Hyatt Regency or even Grand Hyatt options—especially those where club lounges are often overcrowded and chaotic. There’s simply no comparison!||The Room: So Comfortable I Didn’t Want to Leave||Next up, the room. At first glance, I thought it might feel a bit pricey, but after staying in it, I realized it’s absolutely worth the cost. While Hyatt Regency rooms are often spacious, their designs can feel somewhat predictable. Here, the attention to detail in the materials, color palette, and aesthetic balance is outstanding. It’s clear that a lot of thought went into making the space not just functional but also beautiful.||What truly won me over was how much I wanted to stay in the room—not just for resting but to simply enjoy the surroundings and reflect. The room has this unique vibe that slows you down and encourages you to spend time with your thoughts.||A fun detail: I usually don’t bother turning on the TV in hotels, but this time I gave it a shot and was impressed by the wide selection of free movies available! Unlike some hotels that rely solely on screen-mirroring features (which this room also supports), I appreciated the effort the hotel put into curating quality in-room entertainment. It’s these small, thoughtful touches that make a big difference.||Design and Dining: A Taste of Shanghai||The Hyatt Centric brand emphasizes local culture, and this Shanghai property captures that perfectly. From the dining experience to the decor in the rooms, you can feel a connection to Shanghai’s unique charm. It’s a seamless blend of the city’s modern sophistication with subtle nods to its cultural roots. This balance is rare and refreshing—nothing feels out of place or forced, as is sometimes the case with “local-inspired” hotel themes.||Suggestions for Improvement (But Nothing Major)||Of course, there’s always room for improvement. For instance, upgrading the bathroom toilets to smart toilets or at least adding bidet seats would align better with the overall premium experience. Also, it would be nice if the restaurant’s menus and buffet labels included a third language, such as Japanese, in addition to Chinese and English, to cater to international guests. Lastly, adding a few Japanese breakfast options—like miso soup, tamagoyaki, grilled fish, or rice balls with pickled plum—would be a great touch. These items are both classic and versatile, making them a welcome addition for guests looking for something familiar yet high-quality.||Final Thoughts: A Place Worth Returning To||Overall, my stay at the Hyatt Centric Zhongshan Park was nothing short of delightful. The exceptional restaurant, thoughtful room design, and overall experience embody the idea of paying for more than just a bed—you’re paying for a memorable stay. If you’re a breakfast enthusiast or someone who appreciates well-designed spaces, this hotel should absolutely be on your list. I’d gladly stay here again in the future, maybe even just for the breakfast alone! If you’re looking for a high-value, stylish hotel, give this one a try—you...
Read moreThis hotel is situated in the same space where the previous (and much loved) New World Hotel was. It is on the corner of Dingxi Road right next to Zhongshan Park. Construction began in 2020 amidst the covid pandemic and it took until 2024 to complete it. To anyone familiar with the way this hotel space used to be and considering coming back, read on.||The new layout is quite different. Gone is the large ground floor lobby and excellent lounge bar. What you now get is an unecessary ground floor concierge desk with staff that speak to you on entry, exit or even if you are popping out for 5 minutes.|Not good. Tip: to avoid being made feel uncomfortable in this manner, use a mall entrance next door which gets you to the elevators in the first floor and bypasses all their staff! The overly intrusive staff, a lot of which just seem to hang about watching people is not what one would normally expect at a hotel of this quality. ||Getting to the location is easy. Shanghai Metro is right outside, which I used. However the nearby Yan'an Highway provides a rapid transit route from either of the two Shanghai airports. The area that it is in is excellent with some great places including a swanky wine bar next door. The whole immediate area has become a lot better. Yuyuan Road, which I have lived on, now has at least 2 high class bars, whilst Dingxi Road is one long street of restaurants.||About the hotel. The room I got was okay, but not a patch on how they were when it was the New World. Seemed smaller in size.||Breakfast. Another small area, with pestering staff. The dining area is also small and guests were using the adjoining bar! I did not like the breakfast situation and the lack of choice compared to other luxury places I have stayed in was immediately obvious. ||Previously as New World, the hotel was known for its outdoor pool. Hardly any hotels in Shanghai have such a feature. By all accounts, Hyatt Centric Zhongshan Park has retained it but decided to open for business while the pool was still being re-constructed. I say again..the hotel took almost 5 years to rebuild!||The price of a room here is OK in today's market but add breakfast on and it starts to looks a bit not good value. The area has plenty of breakfast alternatives to make it better value for money and a better experience overall.||So, as the first reviewer of this brand new Shanghai hotel, it is OK but probably can find better for...
Read moreDon’t stay at this hotel!!! ⚠️It is the worst hyatt I’ve ever lived in.
For two consecutive nights in a row, our room, and especially the bathroom was entirely filled with the smell of cigarette smoke. This is not only a health and safety concern, but the failure to address the problem is against the local laws.
I contacted the customer service and on duty manager on the early mornings of the june 16th (1:00am). The customer service representative offered me an air filter.
The on duty manager came up to the room and verified the problem, but his only proposed solution was to look for the source of the smoke and offer me a room change the following noon. He explained to us that all rooms were fully booked. Because we would've been outside all morning and jetlagged in the afternoon, I told him that we could not do this in that afternoon.
The next evening at around 11pm, our room was filled with really concentrated odor of cigarette smoke again. We were already asleep and got woken up by the foul smell. The same on duty manager told the same story, every room of this type are fully booked. I called the on duty manager back at 1:00am, and cited a safety concern as the smoke is getting more concentrated, especially in our bathroom and shower. I asked for a temporary room, of a different layout just so I could sleep that night smoke-free.
Only then, he was able to find a vacant room. That new room (3023) was also filled with cigarette smell in the bathroom. We politely asked the staff to invite the manager up to the room to assess the situation, to which he refused. We had to take the elevator down to the lobby at 2am just to speak with the on duty manager.
The manager magically was able to give us a 3rd room, despite having told us that all rooms of this layout were booked. We questioned him as to why he wasn't able to offer us a new room at the very beginning. To which he replied with "I gave you a room that's been booked by another guest yet to have checked in".
I later asked for the contact information of the general manager from the customer service. The customer service rep put me on hold for 20min citing that nobody knows the email or phone number of the General Manager, including the on duty manager. This whole experience was so awful that I have to give this hotel a bad review, don’t...
