So I glanced over some of the other reviews and I understand why most people gave the hotel an AVERAGE rating vs. VERY GOOD. If it weren't for the poor breakfast I'd give it a very good without reservation. The room was quite nice. We were there in November and it was still warm but the AC didn't work. This isn't the hotel's fault though. There are legal restrictions in China as to when hotels/government buildings can have AC and heat. So I think they were already required to switch AC off. The location is good. It is quite easy to take the Metro down to the center. One tip when taking the metro. When you are at the kiosk buying your ticket you must buy the ticket indicating exactly which stop you are starting your ride on and which stop you are getting off. The prices vary depending on how far you are going. The whole kiosk is in Chinese (duh). But in the top right there is a small indicator you can touch and the screen will switch to English. Took a while to find it but once we did it was quite easy. There are two stops quite near the hotel. Also, I like to walk and it really was walkable to the main downtown area. Took a while but you walked through very traditional areas and there weren't many tourists which was nice. One day I also walked to the Longhua Temple. Again, decent walk and very enjoyable. There is a massive store across the street (think Super Walmart) to get food, drinks, random clothes you forgot to pack, alcohol, etc. Others commented on the lack of English spoken by staff. Agree, but you are in China and not in the top tier hotels so I'd say they spoke what I expected them to speak. Few hand signals and they were fine. Also, as with anywhere in China, they have business cards at the front desk in English and Chinese to help you get to different tourist sites (check boxes to show the taxi driver) and that you can use to get back to the hotel as well. Another tip, once you are in the taxi make sure he puts the meter on. If he doesn't make signals to turn it on, point to it, whatever you need to do to get the meter on. Otherwise you are at his mercy for the cost. Have a great stay! FINAL TIP: Do not miss Yangs Fry Dumpling. First time I've reviewed a restaurant. Dirt cheap and amazing. Like ah-may-zing. I went to the one at 97 Huanghe Lu (near Fengyang Lu). It is close to the Peoples Park/Shanghai Museum and not far also from the Bund/central area...

Other reviews have described the conditions. The hotel is quite filthy and the rooms are in very bad shape. A lot of water damage on walls, peeling wallpaper, torn carpets, stains everywhere. That has all been said before. I will add a couple things. I could not find in my 4 days a single person working here who could speak English. Why is this a problem? The room service never showed up or showed up a 6 p.m. one night. There is no mini-bar/snacks in the room (I didnt care about this but it is something to note), there is no room service, I never found the 3 restaurants said to exist at this hotel to be open even during the hours that they were said to be open. There is a gym but it was always locked and when I tried to get them to unlock it (by pantomiming with the staff) one of them eventually showed me her phone with a translation saying "No gym equipment available". I had to have my room keycard reactivated every single day I was here. I think when this hotel opened 30 or so years ago (which by the way appears to be the last time they updated the hotel services binder in your room), it was probably ok. But there are no amenities at all anymore and this hotel has been rode hard and put away wet. So if you want to stay in a dirty, beat up hotel for a couple days go for it. But for not much more money, you can stay in a nice hotel with room service and restaurants and a gym and nice clean rooms and...
