I have stayed in SH many times and this time I decided I wanted to stay somewhere different yet close to everything, and settled on the Metropolo based on it’s proximity to Madang Lu station, Xintiandi and Hua Hai Lu.||||I checked in early after a morning flight from Wuhan and was pleasantly surprised (as I was for most of my trip) that I could check in and gain access to my room before noon. Reception were friendly and spoke a reasonable amount of English for a Chinese hotel. ||||I had booked a deluxe king which is the largest room they offer and as with the rest of the hotel, the renovation is about a year old and the property is like stepping back into 1930’s Shanghai! The room itself was spacious, has automatic curtains (which I miss now!), typical conveniences you would expect such as slippers, a fridge, but only a small selection of tea, no coffee. The bathroom as previous reviewers have mentioned is very small, and became a little tight for space with two people staying.||||The hotel has a lovely restaurant which is more or less deserted after breakfast, but a charming lobby and the hotel is surrounded by local food stalls and a few good options for dinner, plus a Starbucks for those who must. ||||Madam Lu station is less than 5 minutes walk, take exit 3, which has an escalator for those with luggage. Xintiandi is around 10 minutes walk (or one stop on the metro). There is a large mall (Capital-land) just on the other side of the road from the station, which has a good selection of restaurants and shops. ||||We loved the Metropolo, and for those wanting to step back in time and experience Shanghai as it might have felt in the 1930’s I’d encourage you...

Read moreIn short, great value for money and will stay here again as the pros are more than the cons. Pros - basics are met. Aircon is cool and silent. Hot shower has good pressure. WiFi speed is a bit slow but stable. Good quality disposable slippers provided and unlimited complimentary drinking water at every level. Hotel location is great for people who wants to get away from the tourist crowd at Nanjing Road. Less than 200M to Ma Dang Rd metro station where there are 2 major shopping malls. Around 1KM to Xin Tian Di and Tian Zi Fang. Lots of USB charging points around the bed and the room. Cons - faint smoking stench when you turn on centralised air-conditioning but goes away pretty fast. My room #421 is quite close to the neighbouring block so not much privacy if curtains are not drawn. Smallest room size appropriate for 1 person so if you have 2 guests, best to select a...
