I had a horrible experience at CitiGo Suites - I had arranged for a colleague in Shanghai to send me a document (which comprised of some marketing materials) whilst I was at the hotel. The document arrived at the hotel a few hours before me, but what did the staff do? I have a very common Chinese surname, so one of the staff assumed that the document was for a member of staff who had the same surname as myself. They ripped open the letter (which was sent my courier), looked at the contents of the envelop and decided that it was "advertising type rubbish" and threw it into the dustbin. When I checked into the hotel a few hours later, I asked if they had received a courier for me. They flatly denied. ||||By the next day, I had checked with the courier company and they clearly explained that the delivery had been signed for and provided documentation. The staff manager then sheepishly admitted what had happened over 24 hours later. I was furious. Firstly, if you are not sure if the letter was addressed to you, who are you to open someone else's letters when it is confidential? Secondly, even if you did open the letter by mistake and realized it was not for you, any kind of decent hotel staff would have then at least kept the contents of letter for at least 24-48 hours before discarding it. Thirdly, I still don't have any explanation from the staff as to why they had no idea what had happened and denied ever receiving the courier, had they actually knew what had happened, we may have even managed to retrieve my important documents from the dustbin within hours of it being discarded. ||||Needless to say, I was left furious. Fortunately, this was a work trip and my Chinese hosts who arranged for me to stay at this hotel jumped into action and gave the duty manager such a scolding in the middle of the lobby. Perhaps it was a cultural thing, but goodness me, he was groveling with them because he realized how badly his staff had messed up. I kinda felt bad as I knew it wasn't him personally who threw away my documents, even he thought the person who did that had clearly made a terrible mistake and he would have never done anything like that - even he admitted that what happened was totally unacceptable but as he was the manager then, the buck stopped with him. The bottom line is, there was no valid excuse he could offer - his staff had acted inappropriate and made a terrible mistake. ||||This hotel clearly wants to posture itself to be a 4 or 5 star high end hotel, but clearly the staff are not properly trained to deal with even simple situations such as not opening letters addressed to guests or not throwing away items that do belong to the guests. Those documents and papers that were sent to me may have been worthless to the member of staff who looked at it, but goodness me, they were so vital and important to me and I needed it for my work. It caused me a lot of grief, I couldn't believe how incompetent the staff were. And of course, none of them spoke any English to make things even harder for me. ||||My colleagues and host were compensated I believe for this fiasco - I think they were given a discount for my stay there. But since this was a business trip, they got the discount and I got nothing. Not even a box of chocolates as a token of apology for the terrible mistake they made, I didn't get compensated personally for what they had put me through. ||||The room itself was fine but the TV didn't have access to a single English language station, the content was all in Chinese. If you don't speak any Chinese at all, you will struggle with the staff in this hotel. This is ironic as I've stayed in far more down to earth, cheaper hotels in Shenzhen before and even the staff there speak some English but you won't even get a word in English from the staff here. Even the breakfast was quite good. ||||Had my colleague not tried to send me a document at this hotel (that led to this fiasco), I would have still given them a poor rating given the inability of their staff to speak English. They have a long way to go before they can claim to be 4 stars. If I ever return to Shenzhen, I would tell my company not to put...
