After traveling for 30 hours, I arrived in Shenzhen to find my five star hotel cancelled due to a late arrival and 100% occupancy. A business partner suggested Wongtee Vee and stated it was 5 star, as well. It’s not even close. Part of a “5 star” rating includes bi-lingual staff; there are two People here who have a basic smattering of English. Even the most basic request is an absolute struggle. After a very difficult check-in, I entered my room to a horrendous odor. It’s how the hotel smells: like an old, musty house that’s been closed up for several years. The rooms are much worse than the lobby. It will wake you up out of a dead sleep. ||||The rooms are sparse: there’s no art, no decor. It’s basically walls and furniture. Very cold and unfeeling. ||||The view is marginal (hard to do with a gorgeous skyline like Shenzhen). The closet is tiny and the bathroom has a strange layout. There’s zero counter space so everything has to go on one tiny shelf underneath or on the floor. There are no washcloths, as in they don’t have them. There is one frosted sliding door for the toilet and shower. You can either have a door to the shower or one to the toilet, not both. This is not a great if you have two people or guests (I got a large room in order to have business meetings; there’s no way I can bring business associates here). ||||The Wi-Fi is almost non-existent. And the front desk gave me incorrect information as to how to connect (no instructions in the room). They sent someone to my room to connect it and they did not speak English. This necessitated me getting dressed and going back to the front desk to connect at midnight. ||||There is one movie channel in English and streaming is impossible due to the poor internet connection. Half of the light bulbs are burned out. ||||The refrigerator did not work. When asked for a repair or new one, I was rebuffed (I realize cold drinks aren’t a thing here, but I didn’t feel for a “5 star” hotel, getting a working fridge should be that big of a deal). I did get one but it barely cools below room temperature. ||||As my business partner made the reservation through an app, it was charged for two weeks up front with no refund for early departure. A tip: if it’s not an internationally recognized brand with uniform standards, do not book through an app or booking site. There’s nothing you can do and you’re stuck. The hotel can’t do anything and the booking site will not give refunds. ||||If you are seriously looking for a 5 star like Ritz or Four Seasons, run from this place. A Holiday Inn has more...

Read moreI stayed at the Wongtee V Hotel on two different occasions, each for several days on business, in November 2019. The rooms I was assigned were both very spacious with great views, more akin to nicely laid out apartments rather than typical hotel rooms. The hotel is across the street from the convention center, so if you have business there, the location is incredibly convenient. Otherwise, you are in walking distance of several towers in a central business district. ||||There are plenty of dining options available nearby, at the malls above ground (including one next door) and the huge one underground connecting the various office buildings in the area. ||||Breakfast buffet was good, though the hotel needs to make a bit more of an effort to provide protein options besides one choice of eggs and bacon or sausage. The options were one carbohydrate choice after another (dim sum, noodles, fruit, pastries, rice, cereal, congee). ||||The gym at the Wongtee was excellent with both cardio and weights (though I wished they would turn the volume down on some of the TVs). I didn't try the pool though it looked very clean and of good size.||||As some have mentioned, the front desk isn't staffed with fluent English speakers, but I commend the team for calling someone over who could help or being sufficiently patient in working through the language barrier.||||Overall, if you have business in the area, I would rank this as a very solid or top choice, particularly if there is a price savings versus some of the American-owned hotels...
