I can see people have ooh-ed and ahh-ed over the bougie design of this hotel, but I’m hoping this review is a bit more helpful for travelers who want a helpful hotel. For, of course, this is a beautifully designed hotel, but it isn’t in a lively place, it’s in the business district. For those wanting to visit Suzhou, it’s a taxi ride. So let’s get that clear.
Yes the breakfasts were lavish to say the least, but it’s a bit showy: 3 idle chefs standing waiting and a migraine for breakfast because of the sunlight. Didn’t order that with my coffee…
Yep, tallest building in the province, but so what? It means you’re battling glaring sunlight constantly and get an earache every time you’re in the lift. And having to go 115 floors for the rest room as they don’t have one in the lobby, that’s just ridiculous.
After the English fluency of the doorman in the lobby the rest goes out the (very tall) window. Check in was exhausting: the (very sweet) girl that checked me in spoke no English whatsoever - really frustrating after travel. Finding English speaking staff continued to be a problem. I don’t need fluency, of course, but a modicum of English being spoken in the hospitality industry feels fair.
So yeah, it’s beautiful, it’s well designed, I’m sure it’ll look good on Instagram, but I felt like a more honest review needed posting.
Great design but frustrating. Great breakfast but a dinner menu that’s too fancy for its own good (the in room dining menu differs and is simpler!) Great rooms and nice housekeeping touches, but few English speaking staff. Okay gym, empty pool (still not English speaking staff) and lots of people parading round taking photos for Instagram.
Bougie, beautiful, a bit bonkers.
Like a little ex-pat bubble in Suzhou far from the fun of the city that tries hard but a little too hard. If you want to feel like an influencer when you travel then this hotel is 100% for you and you’ll love it. It’s perfect. I can’t recommend it enough.
But if that stuff makes your skin crawl, don’t say I...
Read moreGenerally very good, location is excellent to explore new part of the city, clean, views are literally brilliant, nice breakfast and nice service but the staff clearly lacks english communication skills and attention to details at the level you expect from such a cozy place. For instance reception forgot to brief us on the breakfast and pool/gym location and hours. Our desire to get an additional blanket resulted in a very difficult conversation with the staff, cause my Mandarin is quite basic while the staff couldn't understand English completely. As a result we've got a plate, not a blanket cause in Mandarin they sound alike). After that I've checked the hotel's website again and yes, it says that Niccolo's staff speaks English and even Italian. A truly misleading statement. When we managed to order room service (Niccolo thanks again for Mandarin lesson) - what was left of our dinner we parked in a tray outside our room and it stayed there surprisingly for almost twelve hours cause no one actually cared of taking it away while we were afraid of engaging in another conversation with reception. So, if you are not a good Mandarin speaker I would strongly recommend to think twice before coming here. While again - the hotel itself is...
