Hostel Alajuela Backpackers — Hotel in Alajuela

This Hostel was the worst hostel we saw in our whole one month trip through Costa Rica. In front of the hostel it says free welcome drink and free morning coffee. We wanted to get the welcome drink after check in and went to the bar and the bartender told us that is advertisement is one year old and there is no welcome drink anymore. They called backpackers hostel but have no kitchen. They offer food for example spaghetti for 5$ but the portion is so small it looks like 20 lonely spaghetti. Moreover the bathrooms are very dirty and nasty, there are a lot of people using the hostel for the last night before going to the airport but it seems that nobody checks the bathrooms regular so there were laying a lot of hair around there were something looking like blood in the washbasin. We saw the bathrooms in this status when we arrived and the next day when we leave it was still the same. The climax was we wanted to go to sleep and another guy was already sleeping in the the bed of my friend so the hostel owner overbooked the dorm or somebody sneaked in I do not know. We went to the reception and the reception guy told us that he cannot do anything. He reacts unfriendly and after a hard and long discussion (in he night) he offered us another single bed in in another room. When we got up I was looking forward for the morning coffee but this tasted like water. There just stand a big pot of coffee, sugar, 5 cups and one spoon. I definitely would not recommend this...

This hostel turned out to be quite a scam. Despite being advertised at $11.5 USD per night, the final cost escalated to $14.82 due to the addition of a 13% tax and an unfavorable exchange rate (1:600, compared to the bank's rate of 1:526). The bathroom is dirty and lacks a lock; amenities are minimal, and bottle of water is priced at $2 (in contrast to the $0.38 at a local store). The air conditioning only operates for a few hours at night, and only one window can be opened, making the room unbearably hot for sleeping. The laundry service comes with a hefty $9 price tag. Moreover, the on-site restaurant offers rather expensive food at $8 per plate, whereas the same dish at a nearby restaurant (Soda El Parque) is only $5.

A pesar de anunciarse a $11.5 USD por noche, el costo final ascendió a $14.82 debido a la adición de un impuesto del 13% y un desfavorable tipo de cambio (1:600, en comparación con el tipo de cambio del banco de 1:526). El baño está sucio y carece de cerradura; las comodidades son mínimas y la botella de agua tiene un precio de $2 (en contraste con los $0.38 en una tienda local). Cette auberge s'est avérée être une véritable arnaque. Malgré une annonce de 11,5 USD par nuit, le coût final a grimpé à 14,82 USD en raison de l'ajout d'une taxe de 13 % et d'un taux de change défavorable (1:600, comparé au taux de change de la banque de 1:526). La salle de bains est sale et dépourvue de serrure, les équipements sont minimaux, et l'eau est tarifée à 2 USD (contre 0,38 USD dans un magasin local). La climatisation ne fonctionne que quelques heures la nuit et une seule fenêtre peut être ouverte, rendant la chambre insupportablement chaude pour dormir. Le service de blanchisserie est facturé à 9 USD. De plus, le restaurant sur place propose une nourriture plutôt chère à 8 USD par assiette, alors que le même plat dans un restaurant à proximité (Soda El Parque) ne...

I booked for one night, prior to an early flight. I didn't have big expectations based on some of the reviews I had read...but I was pleasantly surprised. I arrived quite late after a full day of travel from Puerto Viejo and was in need of some food; the man on reception was very polite and helpful and told me about their rooftop bar. I gave it a try - there was a nice chilled vibe, and the food was reasonably priced and very tasty.|I had booked a private room, and it was very spacious with an en-suite. The room was clean and comfy and even had air con! I had read several reviews that said if you face the road/park it can be very noisy ... this was not my experience. |Best of all; included in the price is a transfer to the airport. This was very handy and meant that I wasn't trying to get a taxi at 4am. (1st transfer starts at 4.10am)|The hostel transfer (or a taxi) will take 6 mins to/from the airport.|I would definitely recommend Alajuela Hostel for a night pre/post flight. Not sure i'd want to stay in this area any longer - as it didn't seem particularly 'touristy' - but as a stop-gap this is a very good alternative to the over-priced chain hotels at...
