My wife & I just completed a 7 nite stay at Tasty Dayz Hostel, & want everyone to know how much we enjoyed it! Quite frankly, not enough time. ||Bryton & Lydia, and their great team made us feel so welcomed. ||The accommodations we had were very, very comfortable; 2 double beds, ensuite bathroom with walk-in shower. This unit had AC, & that was nice to be able to cool down after a hike, or day at the beach.||Right outside our room was a large-like lobby area that was accessible for 2 other rooms, too There were comfy chairs, & tables to sit around. Great place to kick back, converse with others, or read.||Another highlite for us was the open-air communal kitchen. Plenty of pots & pans to cook with. Ample refrigeration for your groceries, & 2 stoves. Every morning there was a big pot of Costa Rican Coffee made for your enjoyment. We liked this area, too, as we got acquainted with other guests from all over. We would share our different experiences, & we learned a lot.||The grounds are kept in tip-top shape, & housekeeping would always ask how things were.||Now about Tasty Waves Cantina. Wow, the food is great, the staff is so attentive, & it is a center for some fun activities; trivia, karaoke, & more.||The 2 combined, the hostel and cantina, made it the perfect place for us. Plus, right next door you could take the tour of chocolate making; you are not far from the Jaguar Rescue Center; close to Puerto Viejo; and across the street the best beach in our opinion!!!||My wife and I like to support small businesses, and especially small businesses that give back to their community, and these businesses do|just that!||You can tell we are planning our...
Read moreThis place is everything you look for in a hostel, but with SO much more. The location is directly across the street from the beach and nestled in beautiful grounds full of beautiful flowers and tress. It's just a few minutes to ride in to town for essentials or to explore, or just down the road from the main Cocles Beach stretch and the Jaguar Rescue Center.
I booked a private room - it had all the essentials necessary for a great stay. The room was clean, the bedding was soft, the air conditioner kept me very happy and cool, and the water pressure in the shower is better than what I have at home. The internet is fast, the on-site cantina is delicious and full of nightly activities, the staff are super nice and helpful, the grounds felt safe and secure (and quiet!), and it was a perfect home base to get to know Puerto Viejo and the surrounding areas. I loved snorkeling around the big rock at Cocles that's a less than three minute walk from my room's door to the shoreline - rays, reefs, and lots of fish in some pretty dramatic underwater geography.
And yes, you are in tropical location. There will be bugs. If that's not your thing, you might want to stay out of Costa Rica entirely. I honestly experienced less creepy-crawlies here than my last two trips (once in a more upscale hotel, and the other in a jungle house). I will absolutely be staying here on my next trip to PV, and will recommend it to all my friends!
p.s. - solo female traveller, no issues because I know not to be out and about in problematic places or at certain times. Follow the advice of the staff and...
Read moreWhen my girlfriend and I arrived at Tasty Dayz, we were excited to volunteer at a lively beachside hostel and the owners looked like were easy going. We stayed for one month but within days, excitement turned into frustration, and eventually, we had to leave early.
❌ Poor hygiene As part of my cleaning duties, I cleaned the fridge only to find rotting food left there for who knows how many months. No pillow covers, old and worn-out beds. Worst of all, larvae inside the wooden lockers, which I reported to the owners, but nothing changed.
🤢 Everyone kept getting sick Guests and volunteers suffered from vomiting and diarrhea, sometimes for days. Later, in Puerto Viejo, we met people who had only eaten at the hostel’s bar and experienced the same symptoms during the time we stayed.
🛑 Frequent thefts Phones, wallets, and bikes were stolen regularly. My phone was stolen from inside my locked room while I was just outside. Thieves broke a back window, yet the owners showed no concern. When I asked for compensation, they did nothing except take me to the police station and help me buy a new phone.
This place fails to protect its guests and volunteers.
We left early because Tasty Dayz was simply unsafe and unsanitary. Volunteers and guests deserve better. If you're considering coming...
