I went to the little town of Mindo, which is 2 hours outside of Quito, Ecuador with some other students, and we had a blast! We were planning on finding a hospedaje to stay in when we got there, and chose Samay Juku, (Sam eye, Yookoo) which means "Owl's Rest" in Quichua. The rooms were simple and clean, with private bathrooms, and up to six people in the larger rooms. It's possible to talk from room to room, though, so people overly concerned about privacy could be affected. Service was great! The hospedaje is a family affair, owned by a family who lives in Quito. A delicious breakfast was included for $9 per person per night. Usually it's $12 per person, but we were in a group, so they lowered the rates. You can get dinner at Samay Juku for about $3.50, or go into town. The location of Samay Juku is about .5 km outside of town, and you can walk to the river or down the dirt road and up a hill for an incredible view of the valley. A guide is included in the price, but it's always nice to tip!Our guide Dani was excellent, and took us to the waterfalls and ziplines for a really reasonable price. It would have been a little harder for someone who doesnt speak Spanish, but definately doable, as Dani speaks some English as well. There are also butterfly farms and an orchid garden in Mindo. ||I reccomend this place to travelers who are willing to get off the...
Read moreI stayed 2 nights at Samay Juku and was very pleasantly surprised. Where to begin? In no special order: a very cordial welcome by Danny, clean bright rooms with private bathroom, a good stiff mattress, a great breakfast each day, music, a pool filled with warm water, sofas in the general areas, and much more. What was the best surprise, however, was Danny and how friendly and open he is (and his wife Maggie, too). Danny gave me a run-through of all the possible activities in and around Mindo and the rest of the time he had open arms to discuss many things relating to Mindo and the whole world. It was as though I had known this family for years as old friends. I thoroughly recommend Samay Juku - you will enjoy the first-rate hospitality and the warmth...
Read moreMindo was our first stop on our Ecudorean adventure! Danny and his family were very welcoming and made us feel right at home. He gave us a full run down of all of the great activities in the area; tubing down the Mindo River, the Frog Concert, Butterfly viewing, trekking and canopying. Unfortunately we only stayed one night so we were only able to enjoy a few activities. The tubing trip down the Mindo River was a blast! We also really enjoyed the Frog Concert! Thanks for a great time...
