Read this before you book this hotel and be aware that you have been warned, do not go with the information they provide online. Very disappointed with this stay, and I have been in 30 countries for the last 10 years and many hotels. For this price you are better off in a bed and breakfast. Egypt is known for it's kind and wonderful people and hospitality. Not in this hotel though. Almost all the staff that help you with anything are very pushy about tips even though it looks like they rather be somewhere else. Our first night we went to the pool and got told that a 200ml cocktail was only 110EGP (about 6 dollars) only to find out that with alcohol and the service fee it went all the way up to 420EGP (more than 20 dollars for less than 4oz of cocktail wich was mostly ice) then at 6:30pm we were told the pool was closed and had to leave only to later on find people at night swimming (maybe the staff was okay with ladies swimming at whatever time they wanted), then because there is nothing to eat close by we choose to try the international buffet. Do not try this buffet even if you are starving. The food was awful, it made golden corral feel like a Michelin star restaurant compared to the trash they were serving at this buffet. Then the staff at the buffet was super rude and cold, not a single thank you, smile, or please. The guys at the pasta area tried to avoid eye contact as if they did not wanted you to ask for them to prepare something. Just two pasta options that tasted awful and when they were done preparing it they asked for our plates in a very rude way serving it like it was a jail or something. The price for two people at the buffet was more than $40 dollars with no drinks included only water served in dirty glasses. The other day we tried the Italian restaurant and there the food was much better and the staff were also very nice, prices were still high compared to the Egyptian standard but fair because it is inside the hotel. During our 3 nights, 2 of those nights we were given towels that smelled like cigarette smoke!!!! How come???!!!!! And during our last day I felt bad for one of the staff guys that are supposed to clean the rooms and gave him a 6 dollar tip only for them to not clean our room that whole day that we were out. I honestly just left tips out of fear that they would steal something because of the very rude and cold way we were being treated. We had a pyramid view room and it was not even than good. Saw and heard people in the lobby complaining about being charged stuff they did not ask for too, but dit not happen to me. I gotta say Ahmed the guy in the taxi and tour services at the front desk was very helpful in arranging taxis and tours for us, if you are unlucky and have to stay here at least you can count with him and the driver Mohammed to give you good advice and service although a little overpriced compare to Uber or regular taxi drivers, and tour operators. The installations look very old but somewhat clean, besides the ciggareete smell on the towels and the fact that they might not clean your room. Also I booked here because they were supposed to have a fitness room that they advertise online but it has been closed for two years, some say because of covid rules (even though I dont care about those rules and the staff didn't care either, no mask or anything and the ones with mask would wear it under their chin) and some said it was because it was being remodeled. Whatever the reason it seems like they just dont want to take care of it. Very poor and dissatisfying experience, I come from Mexico where even the worst one star motel would have friendlier staff, decent food, and nicer installations. Avoid this place if you can, and before I get a reply from the staff or whatever apologizing for the bad experience, just dont. Save that apology and just get your...
Read moreBranded drinks at the hotel are costly.. £17.50 for a Jack Daniel’s and that’s without a mixer!! Even the unbranded alcohol was expensive. So, definitely avoid alcohol at this hotel and bring your own from Duty Free. The rooms were very noisy! You could hear every person and door slamming and toilet seat, for that matter. The banging goes on all night, with guests frequently checking in and out at all hours. As a result, we didn’t sleep the first night and got woken early hours by lots of door banging. They are also doing work on the hotel, so from 8 am, it’s just building work noises of banging and electric saws and machinery and then throughout the day until around 9 pm. We were woken at 8.30 am by housekeeping, and if you don’t answer they will just enter, however there are lights you can switch on to say if you want housekeeping and ours was off but it still didn’t stop them. To be honest, I barely got any sleep in the hotel due to the noise. The Hotel is not a 5-star at all! Some websites class it as a 4-star online. In my personal opinion, I would rate it 3-stars at a push. It was a big room but had a grubby bathroom and old worn furniture. The toilet seat was broken, so it moved every time you sat on it, surprised it didn’t completely snap. The bedside table had a glass top which was smashed on the corner, and I ended up cutting my wrist on it whilst getting out of bed. Very dangerous!! The carpet wasn’t overly clean with bits of debris and fluff everywhere and the balcony floor was black with dirt and dust. And under the bed was beyond disgusting! Clearly hadn’t been cleaned in a very long time. Do not walk around bare foot in your room or anywhere for that matter.
Door wouldn’t lock which made me feel unsafe, As well as the safe not working in the room. so I was terrified every time I left the room as we had to carry so much cash on us due to classic holidays not accepting cards and making you use British cash only for drinks and excursions. Which I find disgusting in this day and age! Even the hotel and shops in Cairo take cards and I’ve heard other cruises on the Nile with other companies take card! Woken at 8.30am by house keeping and if you don’t answer they will just enter of course, so be sure to put out the do not disturb sign! There are lights you can switch on to say you want house keeping and ours was off but still didn’t stop them. The food available at the hotel was far from 5 star. I ordered a boneless chicken one night and it came riddled with bones and you can’t argue with the hotel. After getting upset during complaining they then decided to do something about it. Don’t get me wrong the staff are brilliant here but it’s far from 5 star and I’ve done 5 star in Egypt before and this was no way near that standard on every level from room quality to food and entertainment (there’s no entertainment at this hotel) It is more like a 3 star! On other websites including booking.com the hotel is £130 per night and also listed as a 4 star.
Reda, the pool attendant, was fantastic! We had to tip him as he was so lovely. He had the deckchairs ready to go for us each day with towels in the same spot, very attentive. Very friendly and welcoming and funny. He is an asset to this hotel!
Hany, our room cleaner - who might I add, never cleaned the room as we didn’t need it - but would give us lots of water each day. Always welcomed us with a smile and couldn’t do enough for you. Another great asset...
Read moreWe came to this hotel quite excited since it is located right on the opposite site of the Grand Museum that we came to visit, and we've been waiting for these days so much. Unfortunately, our excitement didn't last long. Once we entered the the hotel, our unpleasant experience began. Receptionist (female local lady) was not friendly and seemed annoyed with us when she couldn't find our reservation for quite long time. When I came to take shower first time, I found a huge bunch of shaved black hair sticked by shaving gel to the wall right in the shower, that was disgusting, but I washed it away myself, it's stuck in the bath and didn't want to go down along with foam. Towels didn't look clean enough either. But I still was patient and didn't call reception since didn't want to spoil our mood before dinner. When we came for dinner, there were no option to go with a-la-carte menu but open buffer that costs quite expensive for couple (for Egypt prices). Since it was the only option, and we were super tired after Pyramids tour since early morning, awe had no energy to go outside the hotel for dinner, we took it. And they announced the Italian night, so sounded promising. However, we tried a lot of dishes, and absolutely everything was so bad cooked and disgusting including desserts. And in the end of dinner, we ordered coffee, and the waiter didn't know the meaning of Americano (they didn't have Turkish coffee either) and we was offered espresso and hot water to mix it the cup = Americano. Then my husband take a bite of macaroon and almost broken his tooth since it felt really old and hard like a rock. At this point my husband patience exhausted and he invited the Manager of this hotel. Mohammed who came to us looked decent grayed-hair man with experience at first sight and talked to us politely. He offered do not charge us for open buffet but drinks only (our "signature Americano"). We found it a good compromise and happily left to our room to sleep. It was around 10pm already. Once we entered the room, Receptionist called us unexpectedly and asked for marriage certificate...despite that during check-in when we gave them one, but we were told that their hotel doesn't require. So my husband went down and provided a hard copy of marriage certificate and immediately asked for check out since it was a clear act of retaliation and revenge from the hotel Manager unwisely presumed that I am a young European foreigner, and my husband is Arab, so we came to this hotel to hook up for a couple of nights, he aimed to kick us out without returning back our money, but his amazing plan failed. He was begging my husband to stay, but we left and came back to Mariott Mina House Hotel where we spent previous nights and were welcomed like royal guests. Treating foreigners with "hospitality" like we received geopardizes reputation of the hotel and the entire country. We will never come back to Steinberger Cairo and would never recommend to anybody if you don't want to ruin your vacation. We are a young couple, so we could easily change our plans and change a hotel. But if you travel with kids, and plan to stay there for a week or more, you will...
