From the reviews, I was expecting something terrible. It was not that. This is a cheap budget hotel by a train station. In Paris. It was never going to be glorious. It's a little rundown. The doors lock, the place was clean, the bed was fine, it had a window that led to outside air. The place was warm and the desk guys were, by and large, friendly enough. The hotel is in an absolutely perfect spot for arriving and leaving and seeing what you came to see. There are four hundred bars and restaurants right outside the door, plus a grocery store and pharmacy less than a hundred meters away. I was on the second floor(which was the fourth floor in the kooky numbering system) and the wi fi worked fine in my room. Yes, the room that I stayed in was cramped. Yes the elevator is hilariously small(to me it was a selling point that they bothered to make an elevator that small...SMALL!) Yes, the private bathroom I paid for was styled on a camper bathroom. But the water was hot and everything worked. Outside, at night, there are some homeless folks sleeping in doorways. This accounts for the seedy characters people have mentioned. It's nothing to be alarmed about. If you pick a place beside the train station, you-re going to see this stuff. The more upscale and expensive joints by the train station see the same thing. I was fine with the place. If you're on a budget, this place is worth the shot. I...
Read moreAdjacent to the Gare de l'Est train and Metro station, the Hotel Lorraine is a small, budget specific, and simple place to stay. For the 40 euros per night, I could have stayed in a bunk room hostel without a private shower or toilet away from the city center. But I chose to give the Lorraine a chance, and I ended up staying there twice before and after traveling on the TGV. ||||While there, I had a bearable single bed, a bathroom that resembled an add in like a RV with a shower, toiled and a sink. A TV with a dozen or so French cable channels. Simple. Arrived during daylight and departed early. ||||the manager lived there, and checked me in and out both times there.||||It is upstairs with a street level entrance. There is a small lift/elevator, but I chose to wind up the narrow staircase and it was manageable.||||If you're expecting a 125 euro Ibis right around the corner, you are only fooling yourself. If you are willing to stay cheap, for a quick stop, Lorraine may fit your need like it did mine. And it's a short walk (8-10 minutes) from the Gare du Nord...
Read moreThe rooms were small and the bathroom consisted of a filthy shower and a sink basin. The toilet (size of a broom closet) was down the hall. The bedspreads were circa 1955 and needed to be replaced. The clerk only spoke French and we attempted to communicate in broken Frenglish and with our French-English phrase book. He demanded that we pay, although we had already through Booking.com. When we saw the room, we refused and demanded a credit reimbursement on our credit card. He refused. The owner (another seedy character) was worse. We should have asked to see the room first, before paying. Booking.com did reverse their charge, however. For 85 euros this place is rats nest. We found a 3-star hotel across the road for 18 euros more, that was much nicer with all the amenities. ...
