Our 6 night stay at La Lantern was fantastic, made perfect by Jana and Noel, the hosts. Sarlat is a gorgeous medieval village full of everything you could want from such a location and La Lantern is the ideal place to stay. Set in a big French townhouse inside the medieval bit of Sarlat, you are perfectly placed for everything. The town has loads of great cafes, restaurants and shops, although bear in mind that the French eat lunch at 12-1.30 and dinner at 7-8.30 so after these hours you may be turned away - but easy and welcoming when you know!|||| The walk up to La Lantern is quite steep but I think only folk with some mobility issues would have a problem. You can’t actually park right outside but you’re a short walk from a (pay) car park and about a 5 min walk from a free one. We never had any problems parking (although we had a few 5 minute waits) despite staying during a sun soaked holiday weekend where the whole of France had descended on Sarlat. ||||Our room was fairly small - double bed, with not much room around it but with a good sized wardrobe and nice normal sized bathroom. || However the lounge-cum-breakfast room was lovely - very in keeping with medieval France and plenty of space to chill. One table had a lovely view of the medieval houses and church next door. I also loved the inner courtyard which was perfect for chilling etc in the sun. Breakfast was excellent value - €15 Euros of high quality croissant, chocolatines (not called pain-au-chocolate in this region of France!), jams, cheese, meats, cereals, yogurt, brilliant fresh fruit salad and more or less anything else you wanted (we had a super omelette, crepes and scrambled eggs on different days). Our hosts were clear that ‘the food was for us so please make up sandwiches for the day / take away what you don’t eat’ so effectively we got breakfast AND picnic lunch for €15 each so a total bargain and still there was food left over. There was also free capsule coffee (carte noir), tea, milk and filtered water available all day, to help yourself, so you could have a coffee and croissant in the afternoon in the courtyard after a day trip - perfection.||||However what really made the whole experience special were Jana and Noel. It was like staying at your friends’ place, albeit friends who did everything for you. I cannot stress enough how great these two were at looking after things - simultaneously easy-osey and super professional. They were both keen to help with whatever we needed and suggesting ‘better’ breakfast things they could make for us! Jana also would put the teapots out on a tray for us with milk, honey etc in a tray as she knew we’d have that when we came home. Noel is super cool and friendly, so we had loads of chats - as I said, like staying with friends. They also have the most lovely gorgeous wee dog, Nanouk, who I totally loved, who is very well behaved, never barks (except in command from Jana) and is such a lovely presence in the place.||||This is one of the very best places we’ve ever stayed overall - and we do a LOT of travelling in high end places- and Jana and Noel among the very best hosts we’ve stayed with. Don’t miss this...
