Maison St Clair — Hotel in Toulouse

Visited Toulouse late May 19. Pair of friends in search of gastronomy and good wine. Stayed at the St. Claire Hotel near Jean Jaurès. Good location to walk into the Centre within 10 minutes. It is petit with a small p. 16 rooms on four floors, tiny reception, adequate breakfast room and a lift that claims to take four people – maybe four friendly kids? Very friendly staff, one of whom spoke fluent English. Breakfast was tuned into the number of guests with the coffee machine being the star attraction. A good standard of decoration with everything clean, neat and tidy. Stayed in one of the single rooms that was tiny but adequate for a short stay. Very helpful and friendly staff one couldn't fault the service it was exemplar. Excellent value breakfast. Clean and comfortable. Lots of good points notwithstanding my comments following. It's six years since I last stayed in this hotel and regrettably it's changed. The square outside of the hotel appears to attract "winos" which isn't the fault of the hotel but it was noisy during the night. My wife and I didn't find it as quiet as some comments have suggested. The hotel is now quite dated in parts - carpet outside of lift very worn and reading light on one side of bed missing to name just two examples - and needs some TLC to bring it back to the standard it was a few years ago. For a short city break, this hotel is ideal. It's a nice little hotel with friendly staff and is just a short walk from all the attractions the city of Toulouse has to offer. The rooms are clean and tidy and of a good size, the maid service is excellent. Breakfast is a little expensive but it is convenient and perfectly adequate in a typically French style. Toulouse itself is a fabulous city and, though most of it is easily walkable, the subway and tram system is terrific and very cheap. The restaurants close to the hotel are of a decent quality but there are no shortage of places to choose from within a 15 minute walk. All in all, great...
