Place du Capitole is the vibrant centerpiece of Toulouse, often referred to as the "Pink City" due to its distinctive terracotta buildings. This grand square, dominated by the neoclassical façade of the Capitole (city hall), serves as a bustling meeting point for locals and tourists alike. With its rich history spanning over 800 years, the square is not only a beautiful architectural site but also a lively hub for social gatherings, markets, and cultural events. The square is flanked by charming cafes and restaurants, offering a perfect spot for leisurely afternoon aperitifs under the shade of its canopied terraces. Visitors can explore the Capitole building itself, which houses the stunning Salle des Illustres, adorned with impressive artworks and ornate decor. The square also features a daily market, where eclectic goods range from local crafts to fresh produce, adding to the vibrant atmosphere that characterizes this iconic location. For those looking to experience the essence of Toulouse, Place du Capitole is a must-visit. Whether you're enjoying a meal at one of the bistros, taking in the stunning architecture, or simply people-watching, the square encapsulates the charm and culture of the city. Its lively ambiance, combined with historical significance, makes it an ideal starting point for exploring Toulouse and immersing oneself in its local traditions and culinary delights

The central square in Toulouse. There's a Christmas market on at the moment so it's full of stalls. There's lovely street food for sale as well. I can recommend the Toulouse sausage and onions. Delicious. At one side of the square is the impressive Capitoule building which is the Mayor's office and also houses the Opera theatre. It's open to the public for free but it's a busy place with various functions and weddings going on so public access is restricted when there is an event going on. We failed to get in on the three days we were there. It is in the centre of the old city and seems to be a place where Toulousians gather in the evenings and is a lively place.

This large square is the focal point in the city centre with roads leading out from it in all directions and apparently underground car parking. The beautiful city hall building is the highlight and is lit up at night. There are restaurants all around the square ranging from a lot of formal options with outside dining to McDonald's and kebab shops that are all open late. The place was quite busy after midnight on Saturday in winter. There is currently a Christmas market happening - opens at 10:30am and closes in the early evening.

Was better 10 years ago.. Getting more crowded and more dirty every time I visit.. The noise of the motorcycles around is annoying.. Motorcycle drivers are also driving very fast although the people and the kids.. Nice to stop by at Amorino for an ice cream.. or spending some time at the restaurants facing to the square ( try to not to see the dirt and not to hear the motorcycles.. (I dont want to go in detail about the smell of urine nearly every street of Toulouse!)
