When staying at Accor‘s mid-range Mercure hotel, you probably already have very limited expectations. The Mercure Friedensplatz in Mannheim manages to disappoint even those with relatively low standards. The hotel is in a remote place with very little today in the neighborhood, so think twice to stay there for leisure. The building itself breathes the dullness of the 80s or 90s and most likely has not been renovated since. Carpets and rooms are clearly dated. Talking about the rooms, these are standard and mediocre. No charms, just some bare essentials. Now what made the difference between an expectedly mediocre stay and the poor rating: |- at check-in, the receptionist insisted to charge for the full stay instead of putting a block on a credit card, as experienced with many other places|- the receptionist was unable to pull any information from my Accor profile, which made the check-in process unnecessarily lengthy|- WiFi is unreliable, so do not plan to work there|- Parking is available in front of the hotel and is expensive|- Hotel staff failed to clean my room after the first night. They cleaned the bathroom (so they were definitely in the room) but did not make the bed. |- The hotel bar was closed due to Covid|- The vault in the room did not work. As an alternative, I was offered to store valuables in the hotel safe at the reception. That would lead to complicated encounters every time I needed to pick and or return an item (like my laptop|- one of the two elevators was out of order, creating a bottle neck to go up and down (especially with elevator capacity limited due to Covid)||On the positive side, the place was relatively clean. ||Whatever brings you to Mannheim (work, leisure etc.) think twice if the Mercure is the right choice for you. It might be a good option if you can get it at a great price or if the location is super convenient for you. In most other cases, take a look around if you can find...
Read moreI've stayed at this hotel 9 or 10 times over the years, often with my wife. After this latest experience, never again!||The problem started at check-in. The lady at Reception appeared to speak little German or English! I was tired after travelling all day and enquired about the Restaurant. She told me that it was unavailable due to a Group booking. Excuse me but I'm a paying guest at a supposedly 4-star hotel!||As an aside, I wasn't even offered a "Welcome Drink" which to which my status with my Accor Loyalty Card entitles me.||Reception gave me a menu from an external Italian restaurant who would deliver - I phoned them but they were closed on a Sunday. So, she then gave me a menu from a Greek restaurant - I phoned them but they did no deliveries whatsoever.||I went to see the Restaurant Manager who informed me that they have had a staffing problem for the last 3 months and, in any case, there was no food - i.e. a Restaurant with no staff and no supplies! So, I went hungry that night. ||I tried to have a shower before retiring but there was no hot water. So, hungry and unwashed! This is how Mercure treats its guests.||Next morning, I wanted to have a shower before breakfast. There was still no water pressure, just a trickle of cold water. I phoned Reception and was told there was a technical problem in the boiler room but an engineer had been called - it wasn't fixed by the time I checked-out.||I complained to Mercure Customer Service who were sympathetic and wrote to me that the Manager would resolve the problem and give me the refund I'd requested.||Despite 3 reminders, I've had no contact from the Manager and no refund. ||This hotel and, more so, its management are "not fit for purpose". Mercure need to get their...
Read moreVery disappointing.||It’s not easy to find your way in when driving. Very poor signposting.||I am an Accor Gold member and had booked two rooms some time earlier. On arrival reception refused to believe I had a booking and basically suggested go away as we are fully booked!!! On providing my booking confirmation it transpired the booking had been entered under another name. I asked about parking charges and was told it was free for guests. We did get the rooms and I asked for the name to be sorted out and was assured it would be done. I asked about welcome drinks and was told this was not available on this booking. I was not upgraded.||We tried the restaurant and the simple advice is don’t bother. One of us ordered lemon chicken off the menu and this arrived as a piece of cooked chicken on a plate with nothing else at all not even any sauce. We had not been warned of this.||The crowning glory was the following morning on trying to check out. I have to say the receptionist did try very hard. It transpired no names had been altered and the name and country on my gold card had been altered to the same as the rooms had been booked on!! Nine printouts of an invoice were required before a correct one was produced. This process took a little over 50 minutes not welcome when heading off on a long journey and we subsequently missed a visit that had been planned as a result of the delay.||To finally cap it all we tried driving out of the car park and found that we now needed to go back and pay for parking!!||I will never...
