A Promising Hotel That Falls Short in Key Areas
The Munich Marriott Hotel City West is a relatively new property and, on the surface, presents itself in respectable condition. With its modern design and convenient location, it certainly has the potential to be a great place to stay. However, several shortcomings made our experience less than ideal.
Room Comfort & Climate Control The rooms are disappointingly dark and poorly lit, which detracts from the otherwise sleek aesthetic. More critically, the air conditioning was ineffective during our stay, despite outside temperatures exceeding 30°C. Even with the thermostat set to its lowest possible setting of 19°C, the room remained uncomfortably warm. When we raised this with the front desk, we were told that environmental laws prevent the hotel from reducing the in-room temperature further. This explanation was difficult to accept, especially as we’ve stayed at other Munich hotels in summer without encountering this issue.
Room Layout & Amenities The rooms are compact, with very limited wardrobe space, forcing us to live out of our suitcases. The beds were another disappointment: the pillows lacked support and the mattresses felt surprisingly worn for such a new hotel. To their credit, the staff did replace the pillows upon request. Additionally, the absence of a proper iron (only handheld steamers are provided) made it difficult to prepare clothes adequately. An iron would be a welcome improvement.
Bathroom Excellence On a positive note, the bathrooms are a standout feature. They are well-appointed with high-quality Toto sanitary ware, including a toilet with full bidet functionality, a luxurious and unexpected touch that we greatly appreciated.
Facilities & Service The underground parking garage is a major plus, especially given the hotel’s location. The on-site coffee shop is charming and ideal for a quick breakfast or snack. Staff throughout the hotel were generally friendly, with special mention to the lady at the takeaway counter who was consistently polite and cheerful. The front desk team was courteous, though at times seemed unsure or inexperienced. With time and training, we’re confident they’ll become more effective in assisting guests.
Location While not in the heart of the city, the hotel is reasonably well located. It took us about 17–22 minutes by car to reach Marienplatz, which is acceptable for most visitors.
Final Thoughts Overall, the hotel is acceptable, but we would not return unless the key issues, particularly the room temperature are addressed. With a few adjustments, this property could truly live up to...
Read moreWe stayed at this hotel for 3 nights during our visit to Munich. The reasons for choosing this hotel were because of Marriott Bonvoy program, the cashback program of Amex UK and modernity of the hotel in comparison to other options.
We arrived to the hotel about 00:30 a.m. There was one employee at receptions and they quickly checked us in for our room. Before arrival, Marriott app already showed our assigned room and we were offered a free room upgrade thanks to the hotel not being too full.
The hotel is a very business-purpose built hotel. It doesn't offer much apart from a gym, restaurant and bar.
Our room was absolutely beautiful as detailed below. We had a very comfortable stay during our 3 days. Everything is brilliant and sparkling clean. It also provides an excellent breakfast.
In terms of location, it is not the most central hotel. There are a few tram lines going to the centre of Munich and the tram station is right in front of the hotel. However, it is still quite a bit of a distance to walk from S-Bahn. We think this is the biggest disadvantage of the hotel.
We also found the reception entrance to be a bit poorly planned for guests who are walking to the hotel without a car. It is at the back of the hotel. It makes an unnecessary round trip around the building to reach the check-in desk.
One minor issue that we had was the wrong bill we received at the end of our stay. Our initial reservation didn't include breakfast but we added at check-in after agreeing 58 Euro per day. However, the hotel bill was charged us 68 Euro per day and took the payment. We only noticed this after check-out and the hotel was happy to refund the difference. However, we think that such a simple calculation should be accurate. We could have missed this wrong payment since the preauthorization was already given at the time of the check-in.
Overall, we definitely enjoyed our stay and the hotel is brand new, super clean and super comfortable. The down side is slightly out of the beaten path location, which isn't too bad but just requires a bit of public transport to reach. We appreciate the hotel being proactive about processing our refund too but it would be great to not have a mistake in a hotel bill in the first place. Nevertheless, the hotel definitely deserves a 5...
Read moreMy 4-night stay at this new and modern hotel was excellent.
Munich’s main train station is a 10-15-minute car/tram/train ride. There is a tram station (‘Am Lokschuppen’) just outside of the hotel. The closest train station (S-Bahn) is ‘Hirschgarten’, a 15-minute walk. A taxi from Munich airport will take ~30 minutes.
If you are arriving with lots of luggage, the most convenient method would be by car/taxi. Otherwise, I would use the tram/train.
There is an ‘Edeka’ supermarket less than a 10-minute walk from the hotel.
The hotel exterior and interior are sleek and modern. The hotel itself has only recently opened.
The entire hotel staff were welcoming and professional.
There are several conference rooms at the hotel, and it does have a business-oriented feel to it. There were plenty of tourists as well.
Breakfast was good and the selection was plentiful.
My 1 King Superior guest room was splendid. The modern room design was spacious and welcoming, with plenty of space to store my belongings.
The room was clean on arrival. Housekeeping visited daily to keep the room in top shape.
The room insulation is excellent as I did not hear my neighbors at all. The busy street outside was not bothersome at all.
The bed was very comfortable.
Wi-Fi was fast and worked well. The TV channel selection was plentiful but as with most hotels in Europe, there were few channels in English, mostly news channels.
There is an empty hotel fridge to store food and drinks.
The room safe was large enough to fit a 15” laptop.
As with the room, the bathroom was very modern, with a heated floor. The large walk-in shower area has a stone bench and a rain head + wand. The water flow was good, not great. The shower toiletries were average.
The ‘star’ of the bathroom was the Japanese ‘Toto’ washlet, a very pleasant surprise. I wish more hotels in Europe / North America would install one.
All in all, this is an excellent Marriot hotel. At the end of a long day of sightseeing, I was very happy to return to my room. I would not hesitate to...
