We spent four nights in this lovely hotel. It is in a very central location with a short walk to the main town square and a 10 minute walk to the train station. We came with our car but parked it for four day. With a stay in the black forest hotels you are given a tourist pass that gives you unlimited access to the trains and buses in the black forest region. What a treat.||||Our only blip in the stay was that the closed window leaked during a big rain storm.During the night we got up to water dripping from the window. The carpet was wet and we had to move our luggage. We moved a coffee table and garbage can under the window to catch the drips. After that the room smelled musty when the windows were shut. We advised the staff who said that they were aware that room 4 had this problem and that they didn't know where it is leaking. The next morning the owner apologized and said it must be in the walls too. I can only imagine that this room will have black mold under the carpets.||||We wondered if we would get any compensation. Free parking. A glass of wine. A reduction in the price. Nothing was offered up. Sadly.||||This is parking available in a lot accross the street at the cost of 4 Euros per day. Ask early as I believe there are limited spots.||||Breakfast is lovely but not included in the cost...
Read moreWe’ve just finished a 7 night stay here and had a great holiday. The owner picked us up from the train station and offered us a choice of rooms – we opted for a larger room in an annex across the road from the main building. The room was comfy but without air-con so during this summers’ heatwave we really struggled to sleep (my own fault as I did know this before booking!). The property is on a busy little road too so leaving the windows open resulted in a lot of traffic noise. The bathroom could do with a little TLC and the TV was in an awkward position for viewing but otherwise everything was as you'd expect of a 3* B&B.||||Breakfast included in the room rate is one of the best we’ve had anywhere. It included cooked to order eggs and bacon and a selection of bread, meat cheese etc… all served in the lovely restaurant on the ground floor. We also ate in the restaurant one evening and it was excellent.||||The location of Gasthof Hirsch is excellent. Literally 2 minutes’ walk to the train station and 2 minutes in the opposite direction to the old market square full of restaurants and bars. We used Gengenbach as a base to travel all over the Black Forest – all free of charge using the Konus guest card (which also gives free entry to the open air pool...
Read moreThis is a great hotel for the price, and its main benefit is the LOCATION. It's literally right around the corner from the gate to the altstadt (oldtown). Actually, our window looked out at the town wall, about 10' away!
The rooms were furnished nicely, with a comfortable bed, and were very clean. The size of the room and bathroom were average. The television got many channels and the wifi was fast enough for our needs. The hostess (from Lithuania) was very helpful with directions.
Hirsch appears to have been much grander in the past. It has a nice bar with keg taps, and a great seating area with crafted wooden tables/chairs. The dining room is also impressive. Sadly, they no longer serve food/drinks here (although the kitchen looks impressive from the front desk), and the dining room is only used for breakfast. I asked if it was open seasonally (we were there before New Year's), and was told no.
With a little effort, the owners could elevate this hotel to four stars (and charge more). Open the bar, and serve (at least) snacks from the kitchen. They should also have a website, allowing guests to view...
