The most mountainous vineyards in Greece, at an altitude of 1100 meters, are in Metsovo. From 1959 the Katogi Averof winery houses more than 1200 oak barrels. We enjoyed the tour inside the cellars where Mr.Keli Naka (Κέλλυ Νάκα) explained to us the whole process of fermentation. She showed us where the red wines mature and barrels with people’s pictures. Moreover, she showed us the barred-room where the oenologists hold the rare collectible bottles with vintage wines from 1974 onwards. Furthermore, she presented to us Evangelos Averoff’s memorabilia and personal items while she told us about winery’s flashback history. She explained to us the workers’ struggle to protect the grapes from being eaten by the mountain bears and the barrels’ cleaning process. Also, we learned that Metsovo is a lucky city that enjoys an Averoff wine that does not sell to the rest of the world. This one called Flogero (Φλογερό). Our visit of the winery, using a variety of audiovisual media along with Mrs.Naka, concludes with a tasting of Katogi Averof wines. She was so kind and willing to explain all the special wines with their different varieties. Overall, it was a great experience within a very informative wine tour that you should not miss it.
Bonus: The winery tour was free of charge.
Tip: Do not forget to eat at their restaurant, where they inform you which wine matches the food you have chosen. If you want to do a wine tasting, just make sure that you arrange it in advance. Do not forget to purchase their homemade hilopites, trahanas and many marmalades selling at the gift...
Read moreWe had two superior rooms for one night in the week leading to Christmas. It was all very lovely, comfortable, stylish and representative of the area without the over-the-top heavy/wooden look that is so traditional for Metsovo and done to excess elsewhere. The rooms were spacious and had a little balcony with only a side view unfortunately. That, and the fact that some very noisy residents kept us awake way past midnight (indicating that the walls are rather thin), are my only criticisms. The bathrooms were really spacious and the products Caudalie (with minimal plastic packaging). The breakfast was exceptional, with great variety and high quality products, made in situ or sourced by local farmers and their own cheese making business. A great way to start your evening is by having a drink at the cosy bar serving wines and tsipouro from the hotel vineyard. ||We also visited the shop on the premises and were given a little (20’) tour of the winery. The prices at the shop are excellent, at a small discount. (The same wine that was around €25 in the shop was being sold for €10 more in one of the local produce shops in the town square.) The Romanian lady at reception was very helpful and pleasant, as was all the other staff we came across. All in all, I would definitely recommend this hotel and hope to return...
Read moreThis was one of the best hotel stays I have ever had! The hotel is elegant but very comfortable, with nice amenities. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and spoke excellent English (really nice because my Greek is very limited). Katogi Averoff makes some of the best wines in Greece, and it was really fun to try them while sitting by the fire right next to the winery. The winery tour is also great and super worth checking out whether you stay at the hotel or not. Breakfast is incredibly good, with lots of homemade foods and preserves, and local meats and cheeses. During our stay the chef even made my wife a special pescatarian menu for her birthday, which was so nice of her, and a good example of how accommodating everyone at the hotel is. I can't say enough good things about Katogi Averoff - I think it is the perfect place to stay in Metsovo and I hope to...
