This was 2019: We have stayed in many different hotels and apartments in Georgiopolis - but now, we will never stay anywhere else. Drosia is run by the most lovely, warm hearted owner, Christina, whose mission is to ensure her guests are looked after in the best possible way. The room is quite basic but spotlessly clean and contains everything you need - like a fridge, a kettle and basic cutlery and crockery. As you can imagine, if you want for anything else, Christina will find it for you! I loved the shower - in many Greek rooms the shower head has no wall fixing and the water goes everywhere - not so at Drosia - the long shower curtain kept our bathroom floor totally dry! We slept soundly every night, in part because of the Raki Christina left in our room on day 2, but also very much due to the 2 sliding doors to the balcony (one of which is blackout) which makes the room totally silent at night. The aircon is super efficient too! Practicalities like a hairdryer (and a plug next to the mirror with a light over!), individual over bed wall lights and plentiful hanging space make life very easy. The WiFi is free and mostly works well. Towels and bedding were changed more than we needed and the room was cleaned daily. We loved our time spent at Drosia and our evenings on the balcony watching the world go by! It is probably one of the cheapest accomodations in GP but it ticked all our boxes and more! All this, only a few meters from the main square, the harbour, the beach and all the lovely tavernas!
And now in 2022 .....after an enforced absence and a few cancellations (!): All I can say is that this hotel is as friendly and welcoming as its always been - Christina will go those extra steps to ensure you have the most relaxed and comfortable stay - the rooms are still spotlessly cleaned, well equipped with fridge, kettle and utensils (ask for anything more you need and it will be provided!) and more than reasonably priced! They are quietly located (silent in fact because of the double balcony doors - one being the blackout one) yet perfectly positioned by the bridge for a stroll to tavernas aplenty, Kalivaki beach (or the town beach) for an early morning swim and the eucalyptus tree road alongside the river for an occasional run! The bus stops for Rethymnon and Chania are just a few hundred meters along the road opposite the hotel if you want a few drinks further afield! We had a car for a few daytime excursions and trips to the long beach further east and parking on the hotel forecourt could not be easier, closer or safer. We wouldn't stay anywhere else and this time we brought friends who loved it there as much as we do and are talking of rebooking as soon as they can! Thankyou Christina yet again for looking after us all so kindly (and for the little treats you left in...
Read moreThis was my inaugural visit to Crete and the town of Georgioupolis, after a recommendation from friends who've been visiting for years. When researching places to stay, I was disinterested in the seemingly characterless, all inclusive, corporate hotels on offer. My preference was for the small family run businesses, who to me, represent the cornerstone of the tourism industry. Drosia Hotel ticked all the boxes and then some. I arrived late night, to a warm greeting at reception, and the next morning I met with the property managers who were extremely welcoming. I instantly felt this little hotel exuded a sense of wellbeing and contentment - in Denmark this is known as 'hygge'. Having spent my student gap year on the mainland living with a Greek family, this Hotel took me back to those happy memories. I instantly fell in love with Drosia's charming retro styling and its relaxed ambience. With high temperatures and beach lounging, simple and essential facilities are all that's required by me, but I do expect rooms to be super clean, well maintained and with aircon. This place delivered on all counts. A great advantage, is it's location, being on the town's periphery and therefore somewhat quieter, whilst still within metres of the pretty town square, a good selection of tavernas, coffee shops and grocery stores. You can take a leisurely stroll to the beach within minutes. I enjoyed 'getting away from it all', whilst also having enough balcony space to set up my 'office' for doing remote work. The free wifi was an added bonus. I enjoyed the friendly, caring hospitality, and some great conversations with the hosts. This is what I call a 'traveller's holistic experience' - getting to know the authenticity of place, culture and people, making friendships and building connections. Drosia enables all that - and this traveller couldn't be more grateful. It's definitely a 5 star experience from me, and I've already booked my next...
