Before our flight back home we decided to stay a few days in a place not to far from the airport, but away from the busy Heraklion region. An internet search pointed us to the Carpe Diem Hotel in Archanes, where we were still able to book a room for the desired dates. Archanes is a real gem of a village. It is unspoiled by tourism and full of authentic Cretan liveliness. The streets and city square are full of local inhabitants going about their business and enjoying a plethora of local bars and restaurants. Carpe Diem hosts Eleni and Gian Andrea showed us what Cretan hospitality really is all about. Not only is their hotel testament to their hard labour and good taste, turning a formerly derelict property into a sort of hidden village palace, their friendliness and helpfulness really made the difference. Read moreWe stayed twice during our holiday. The first time was when our original hotel let us down and we had nowhere to stay and we had one of the suites - which was spacious, luxurious and quiet. The second was when we decided to stay closer to the airport on our last night and the obvious choice was to return to a hotel we could find no fault with (we stayed in the smallest room, although it still has eveything you need for a comfortable stay). Eleni immediately makes you feel welcome and the hotel is in a central location close to the restaurants. It is close to Knossos and other less known Minoan sites, and Heraklion is easy to reach. The breakfast is a lovely way to start the day with fresh fruit, cakes and yoghurt. Highly recommend staying here if you prefer a quiet location but close to the sites and...
