Bakaliko Crete — Restaurant in Municipality of Archane - Asterousia

If you are in Archanes, don’t miss a stop here! First and foremost, the owner, George, is an incredibly kind, thoughtful, and generous person. He treats each and every one of his customers as a friend. He is an expert in Cretan wine. We toured a few wineries while in Archanes and they were great (all recommended by George). But, our favorite tasting experiences were here. We had him curate a tasting for us two nights in a row and every single one of the wines he offered was incredible. I recommend going for a tasting followed by dinner. The food was incredible as well! My son said the seafood pasta was one of the best he’s ever had. My husband and I loved the rice pilaf with roasted lamb. We had three desserts and they were all outstanding, especially the mastic crème brûlée and the lava cake. George also gifted us a lovely dessert wine to pair with our desserts. George’s daughter helps him and she is just like her father - warm hearted and hard working. Lovely food, great staff and a fantastic atmosphere.

We ended up dining here on several occasions during our recent summer holiday in Archanes. The staff are friendly and speak great English. The menu is not as extensive as some of the neighbouring restaurants, but what they do, they do well, and our family really enjoyed it.

There is a great selection of wines available and the owner is clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about them, and will happily offer you a wine to compliment your choice of food.

Personally, I enjoyed the Cretan tapas and the Moussaka, but all of the food my family had, was really well received.

My kids highly recommend the lava cake for dessert. 😂

If you're ever in Archanes, I'd urge you to give Bakiliko a try.

Normally, a review is left in 2 cases: you have liked or you have hated the restaurant. In the case of Bakaliko I couldn’t not leave a review because it’s been love at first taste. We have experienced many restaurants in Crete but Bakaliko beat all. The fundamental elements of this restaurant in the center of Archanes are:

1. the location: essential but elegant with a shop in the inside part where it’s possible to buy many local products
2. the food that is excellent: fresh ingredients used to prepare with a great love many dishes of the traditional cuisine 3) George: he has been really hospitable and warm from the beginning. He is passionate for wines and you can perceive it. He has a large choice of Greek and especially Cretan wines.
