We arrived late night and had to find the owners to get the keys to our room, our cases were carried up for us to the third floor which was kind. When going into the room everything just looked tired and not clean. The bin in the kitchen still had tea bags and rubbish from the previous occupants, the eclectic mix of crockery and cutlery wasn’t clean, the bathroom had soap scum/marks all down the toilet and shower. There was poo under the toilet seat. When moving the beds apart it was so dusty . There was no brush in the room, usually when you do self catering you get a broom. The blankets which we used had a suspect brown mark on it. The apartments were just not what we had expected. The road noise unless you had the patio doors shut was always there plus you are on the flight path so planes flying overhead all day. Maybe the apartments overlooking the pool might not have had so much noise as the ones at the front and side. The balconies along the sides of the apartments are long and thin so be aware that you can only sit sideways. The pool area was very tired with cracked tiles and several trip hazards. The pool had a rim of green around it. The road that you need to cross to get to the main part of Gouves is a busy road so you have to take care. There is a lovely little supermarket if you turn right out of the apartment and cross by the bus stops. It is a good 20-30 minute walk into the main part of town, there are other roads that you can go down that will get you to a few nearer tavernas and a bakery about 10 minutes away. The various beaches are spread along the coast, sun beds range from €6-20 for two beds and an umbrella. The market in Heraklion on a Saturday is more for fruit/veg and local produce. There are clothing stalls but a lot of them are big piles of mixed clothing or crockery, little bit like a jumble sale. Buses always seem to be good. Old town Hersonissos is definitely worth a visit, very picturesque and the tavernas are excellent. If you love animals and want to take a dog out for a walk do visit Gouves animal shelter, they are doing a wonderful job. ||When choosing kleanthi apartments over another apartment nearer to the main area of Gouves, we went with Kleanthi because of people’s reviews, unfortunately for us it was a huge...
Read moreMy partner and myself have just returned home from a fantastic holiday in Kato Gouves in Crete. We stayed for 10 days at the Kleanthi Appartments. It’s a small family run establishment with 14 rooms. We had a 1st floor room overlooking the pool. As its self catering the room had adequate cooking facilities and fridge. Air conditioning and secure storage box are available at a small additional cost. The room was very clean and spacious with more than enough room to be comfortable. |The lady that the hotel is named after made our holiday, we paid for breakfast and nothing was too much to ask for if you didn’t want the full English or Continental breakfast. Kleanthi made sure she provided whatever you asked for. It made you feel as if you were staying in someone’s home and we were both made to feel very welcome. |The location is perfect, it’s a 5 minute walk from the main part of Kato Gouves so you can enjoy a fun lively evening and quickly return to a quiet hotel when you want your sleep. |The pool bar is open until 1am so if you want to continue your night you can whilst enjoying the company of Kleanthi and her son along with any other guests that may also be enjoying a drink. |There are two supermarkets and a car hire business a five minute walk from the hotel so getting supplies and a car to explore the island is very easy. Food and drink prices in the vicinity are very reasonable, our favourite restaurants were Medusa and 2 friends taverna. Both are very popular, best to make a reservation if you want to guarantee getting a table after 19:30. Some restaurants in the area are closed on a Tuesday, which makes all the other restaurants extremely busy. So making a reservation for a Tuesday evening is essential. We didn’t and found out the hard way and ended up going back to the hotel and eating snacks in our room. |Other guests told us that they keep coming back year after year to this hotel and I can see why, it really is a gem. |Thank you Kleanthi and Nikkos for making our...
Read moreThis is the 4th time we have stayed here and it is such a reasonably priced little place to stay. We had a car, so getting about to beaches was easy for us. Trickier if you don’t have car. However, buses are plentiful, cheap and easy to access from the property. For hospitality, you cannot fault this place. Klio just takes care of you like family. Nikos , her son, is also on hand and mans the bar in the venting, with ease . They also host a BBQ evening which is one of the best I have ever been to.|The food is amazing and the price is ridiculously cheap . |However, our only gripe is the cleaning. Especially the bathroom. I had to take our bin and scrub it clean , inside and out. It smelled so badly of stale urine. The sealant around the toilet is yellow and also smells of urine. Behind the bathroom door was a corner of dirt and I wasn’t sure if it was just a stain on the tiles. I took an old cloth with cleaning fluid and it washed off cleanly. We had dropped something on the floor of the bedroom and the dust under the beds was astonishing ! However, all that said, it’s just little things that can be addressed easily. The stay was just lovely as we actually don’t spend too much time in our room anyway. The balcony is spacious .|The only problem is if you have any mobility issues, there is no working lift and we were two floors up a rounded staircase and getting up and down with heavy suitcases was really difficult. I have hip and knee issues and hubby has had a knee replacement. Needless to say, we tried to remember everything we needed for each day, as a trip up and down two floors and in the heat , was tricky . The views though, were spectacular. All in all, a lovely wee gem of a place where you will be very...
