Our first impression of Porto platanias is that it is a lower mid-tier family resort. While the inclusions of play parks, multiple pools, baby beds and a daycare are nice considerations they do not overcome the multiple shortcomings we have noticed in our first few hours here. Our first disappointment was the receptionist who could not be bothered to give us 100% of his attention during check-in; he was on the phone for a third of it, spent another third asking people behind us in line why they were here to see if he could have some "quick win" fixes and ended the check-in by speed running all the instructions of our stay and the resort map. These rushed explanations led to the misunderstanding of where to eat and what was included in the half-baked where the serving staff was much more well-mannered and even offered the two wines we ordered without knowing we would be paying for it. The buffet was well furnished with various options of meats, fish, salads, sides and desserts. Although there are vegetarian options, they are clearly less varied and refined. Time will tell if we get bored of the salad bar within our week long stay. The sea view from the main restaurant is very nice and quite peaceful. So far, the experience is 50/50 but the reason I am making my review so early in my stay is due to something that won't change in our time here, the sub-par room. hile spacious and with a kitchenette, there are many shortcomings and defects that make it seem like a cheap hotel room as opposed to the luxury resort it is trying to be. First thing you notice coming in are two large bright green plastic tabs hanging from under the lounge TV. I can only assume these are mounting guides left there. The kitchen has a cooking corner but the light and exhaust above it don't work. The mini fridge is very hard to open and slides out of place every time. The glass showers do not fully close or the stairs are to work to be efficient leading to spilling and wet floors; also the drain cover is loose and flow is slow resulting in a piece of plastic floating around. The sinks are well furnished with a glass, soap dispenser and various kits (sewing, shaving, tooth care) but there is no room to set your own things down. The furniture is generally dated; the bed lights are noticeably crooked and my end table drawer already fell out of its tray multiple times. Last but not least, while the resort offers many activities, one of them is a mini-disco currently keeping my eldest up as it is quite loud and easily heard from our room. Overall, we expected more for 3000 euros a week. Maybe my review will change by the end of the week if I am able to enjoy other aspects of the resort.

Where you get your room in the hotel matters. A lot. At first when we arrived we got rooms that didn't look anything like the pictures in the hotel's website. Our sea view room was on the ground floor with the smallest balcony of all sea view rooms, and the actual sea view was mainly blocked by a restaurant and parked cars. The craziest thing however was, the room literally didn't have a single power outlet. Where are you supposed to charge your devices? Only if you disconnected the lamp on the table, you got one, but however with two people travelling, very inconvenient. And so low and below standard from a hotel that's supposed to have 5 stars. It's 2024, do better! The other people in our group had also very average room, same thing with power outlets, and a view to the road/ ATM machine. Not very fancy. Luckily we managed to get our rooms changed the next day, thanks to the two very nice and helpful receptionists, Lorena & Katerina. These rooms were on a completely different level. Modern, many power outlets, bigger balconies & even kitchenettes. They were worth the 5 stars. Hotel area of course with the 5 pools and many restaurants is very great, and the location is amazing close to the center and directly situated on the beach. So for us things luckily worked out well in the end and it ended up being worth the money, but had we stayed in the first rooms we were given, this review would be completely different.. Another thing the hotel could look out for are the cats that hang around in the hotel area everyday. A 5 star hotel certainly has the resources for taking care of them, it shoudn't be left to tourists like us to feed them etc.. Even if you didn't choose to have cats in your hotel area, you could still have the decency of showing them some respect.. Just something fellow animal lovers should know.

Definitely not a 5-star hotel. The air condition in our room was working maybe half of the time and it would randomly turn off (not because we opened the doors or anything, but out of nowhere). The ventilation is located by the door, but the bedroom is in another “section” of the room and you get almost no air from the air condition in there. Same goes for the bathroom, unless you always keep the door open. Everything in the room was damp because of this, and the whole room smells musty. Especially the night stands next to the bed; do not put any of your stuff in there because they will smell like mold afterwards! There is also only 1 power outlet in the entire room. Doesn’t work well when you are two people traveling with multiple devices that needs charging. The bathroom was entirely out of shower gel when we got there. They didn’t refill it when cleaning the room in the morning so we had to ask the reception for them to fix it. Waited for several hours and nothing happened, so we had to find someone who was cleaning and ask them directly. One time they cleaned the room and took the dirty towels, but forgot to replace them with new ones. So again, we had to go to the reception and get them to deliver new towels. There was also something spilled on the bathroom floor on the first day and it was never washed away, which means that the floors weren’t cleaned properly. The room we got was on the basement floor, so we never got any sun down on our “balcony”. It was not possible to dry any clothes out there, so keep that in mind if you book a room with unspecified view. The only positive thing about this hotel is the location and that the staff is very friendly in general. However, sleeping in a damp bed for a whole week in a musty room is not something I would consider doing again.

Cockroaches, insects, old crampy rooms with worn out furniture is only some of the problems that this, at best a 3 star hotel has. Worst hotel we have ever been too.

Cockroaches & Insects: We had a 4 day stay which we had to cut down to 2 days when we found a huge cockroach on the floor near the bed and also some other insects. We showed the pictures to the front desk complaining about the cockroach to which the woman said " Oh, this is nothing. We have cockroaches in every house in Creta. It's very common and not a big issue" She was trying to brush this off like it was not a problem. We initially asked for a different room and that they atleast call an exterminator or pest control to sort out the problem. They said that they will take care of the room for us but that we needed to not go inside for about 1 hour. When we went back in it was only sprayed with a chemical by the room service. No exterminator was called. The body of the cockroach was gone but bits and pieces of it were still smeared on the floor. Which means they didnt even clean the room. We checked out of the hotel minutes after and demanded a refund on the remaining 2 days left of the stay. ( I will try to upload pictures of the insects later )

Rooms: The rooms are small and don't look at all like in the pictures online. The bed is actually 2 single beds pushed together and are very bad quality because everytime you move the whole bed travels on the floor. You cannot sit up with your head on the headboard because the bed sets sail towards the other side of the room. The airconditioning is noisy and locked to a set temperature. When we asked the desk about this they said the temperature cannot be changed. Everytime we opened the balcony door the auto mechanism would shut down the airconditioning. The TV volume is also locked to low volume. Maybe because the walls and floors are not sound proof because you can hear the neighbours upstairs walking about in their room. The furniture is nothing to write home about either. Old and worn down. The doors to the rooms are also old and you can actually see the repair done to them. The bathroom is extremely crampy and not clean or modern at all. Also if you want to use appliances in the bathroom, there are no electrical sockets in there. There are also no complimentary toiletries provided whatsoever. The internet speed is abysmal, 1mb download speed. An internet powered by a mouse running in a mousewheel gives better speeds than this hotel. So if you want to watch Youtube on your phone... good luck.

All Inclusive / Food: They advertise the all inclusive package , which we bought but we found out that not everything is inclusive there. The all inclusive information pamphlet is very confusing. Buffee food was ok but again nothing to write home to mother about. There was no aircondition, they had the windows open on that hot summer day. Saving on the electricity bill I guess.

Facilities: The pools are just some avarage pools. We weren't enticed to even use any one of them. Very worn down and not modern at all. The sunbeads were as if they were bought off the second hand market, worn down. The corridors are extremely narrow with not alot of space to walk. I got the sence of claustrophobia there. The gym was small and worn down with old equipment. Not worthy of being called a 5 star hotel gym. Maybe a 2 star gym. There is 1 old billiard table, 1 vending machine amoungst 1 or 2 other things there by one of the pools.

Pros & Cons: Pros, about 30 meters from the beach and near the local market. Cons, everything listed above and more.

Review: Old worn down and at best a 3 star hotel trying to make as much and save as much money as possible. This is by no means a 5 star hotel. Please stay away and save your hard earned money. This hotel almost ruined our vacation. I genuinely don't understand how people have given positive reviews on here at all so far. Hope this...

We paid £170 a night with taxes for 7 nights. We stayed in room 1505 and this is my review.

As people have mentioned in previous reviews this is not a 5 star hotel. Not in facilities or service.

I would say 99% of staff are miserable, rude and unfriendly. There is no service with a smile and they look down on you. Here are some examples:

On arrival there isn't a warm welcome or service with a smile. Asking where the kids club was. The woman at reception just shrugged her shoulders. Then got a map and circled the kids club but didn't actually explain how to get there. When walking past any staff there is no hello, good morning, smile etc.. At breakfast you go to the table reception and get assigned a table. The table you are brought to is not even ready. So you are standing there just waiting for your table to have a tablecloth, cutlery etc... put on it. I wanted to grab a water bottle from the bar. It was 4:45pm and the bar apparently only opens at 5pm. All I wanted was a bottle of water but the bar man said we don't open until 5pm.

The breakfast setup is shambolic. If you sit upstairs you have to go down and get your food. Then you carry your plate up a busy set of stairs to get to your table. Tea and coffee are not consistently served to your table every day. Waiting staff seemed baffled when I asked for non dairy milk and basically didn't want to help.

I wanted to use the microwave to heat up my toddlers' food. I called reception and the guy at reception said he needs to speak to another team and he will call me back. I waited 30 minutes and no call-back so I called reception again. This time someone else tells me I need to go to the restaurant to ask for a microwave. This is terrible customer service.

We apparently got an upgraded room. We were meant to get a garden or pool view room. We got a room facing the front of the hotel with a lot of road noise. It was so much I couldn't sleep. The room was very small and dated. The shower doesn't work and the toilet leaks. The toilet door lock is broken so we couldn't lock the door.

The silly charges at this hotel are ridiculous. They would charge you for breathing if they could. To use the SAFE in the room you have to pay!!!! I have never seen this in any hotel. To use the water park which is part of the hotel you have to pay. It's beyond a joke. The beach chairs you have to pay for.

On a positive note the breakfast selection is good and parking is free. The beach is close by.

Overall, this hotel was terrible and I would not recommend it. I know Crete is expensive but for £171 a night you expect so much for your money. We feel very disappointed with our experience and would not recommend this hotel. We will not...
