We had book prepaid stay for 3 nights. It is a beautiful portugese house turned into an aesthetic boutique hotel. However it is poorly maintained, atleast our room was really small and dingy. The windows leakages were blocked by stuffing paper balls, glass water bottle provided was unclean and there were cockroaches. Two beds were joined to make double bed which kept moving disturbing sleep. Our room was on ground floor where one could hear staff talking and guests chatting at breakfast time making it noisy. The worst thing is the service. The caretakers did not care at all. There is absolutely zero network for both Jio and Vodafone atleast. When we asked about this we were told network is a problem in Goa! We are Goans from Panaji so we know its not true. We have also stayed in Fontainhas at the white Balcao where there was network. Defaming Goa in general just to cover your flaws is not okay. Also wifi didnt work on one side of bed i.e half the room and we were told to keep switching between 3 wifi networks as none worked properly. We told him to give us another room on the upper floor as were staying away from home there for work and need to make frequent calls. He had the audacity to tell us to use wifi and said problem kya hai? On persuading he told us he will check with some madam and let us know that evening, evening when we asked again he said by morning he will inform and this continued till 3rd day morning . I asked for the managers number which did not get through. He then told us to pay extra if we wanted another room. We were told manager is available only when she has wifi! Over all a beautiful place run by people who dont care about...
Read moreAfter a rough night at a previous hostel, I arrived at Mateus with low expectations. Let me tell you, Mateus completely blew me away!
The staff's courtesy shone through from the very beginning. Despite arriving well before check-in, looking travel-worn and frustrated, they kindly allowed me to store my luggage. They even checked in on me (without being intrusive) to see if I needed anything. I also had the privilege of a delightful conversation with the owner and another guest, which truly added to the warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Location? Perfect! Mateus sits within walking distance of Fontainhas' charming restaurants, pubs, and cafes. It's the ideal blend of historical charm and modern comfort.
The rooms themselves are well-equipped with all the necessary amenities. The complimentary Wi-Fi was a lifesaver, especially considering the spotty mobile network coverage in the area.
But what truly sets Mateus apart is its character. Scattered throughout the hotel are hidden nooks and crannies waiting to be discovered. Curl up with a book and a cup of coffee in the common area, browse through their charming library (a small bookcase, but full of character!), or relax in the tranquility of the backyard garden.
The staff went above and beyond by recommending hidden gems to explore and providing a must-try list of local delicacies.
If you're looking for a place to unwind, feel welcome, and experience the true spirit of Fontainhas, look no further than Mateus. It's a hidden gem waiting to...
Read moreFirst impressions were wow. Great hotel, great location, a lot of heritage style interiors and a great host. I person, this was exactly as described.
On pictures, this looks like super amazing hotel. But pictures are very centric to the picture taker. I felt the hotel needed a little TLC to sort the items which were pending.
Pros: Host Ayan was excellent he accommodated us for some impromptu extension in plans. Bathrooms are great and well maintained. Very rustic feel of the lost Portuguese heritage. Calm and cool atmosphere. Relaxing and unnerving when your in there. Ac rooms with ceiling fans and a storage cupboard and work table for your needs. Food is excellent. Pancakes, Parathas, eggs and toast were the best you could have for the price range.
Cons: Bathroom doesn't run hot water. Its available on demand but limited. But during the hot days, the water in the taps run naturally luke warm. So unless your picky about running hot water, make sure you demand from the hotel. stairs are super steep. So for a large person like me, it was a hard climb. But its not a show stopper. the beds are super comfy, but needs a little extra love.
Overall verdict: 4 stars, for the food, the hospitality, the host and the realism of the place. Again, the host Ayan makes it all happen, so kudos to the host for being super...
