A well established guest house close to Dal Lake in a quiet location. John (good English) and his family are warm and friendly and can help with arranging boat stays and tours. They also offer breakfast. Bedroom had a good mattress. Bathroom only has cold water bucket shower. For a hot shower you need to use the one downstairs. (good hot water). Towels not provided. Need to ask for top sheet if wanted. Location is away from any road and you can only access it by foot along boardwalk. Definitely make sure you are aware of location off line (Maps.me has two places pinned) as usual Indian pre-paid sim will not work in Srinagar. Best way of coming by taxi is to ask for Dal Lake Ghat 1. You have to cross the bridge to the other side of the lake. Then walk along the boardwalk till it stops being tiles and becomes boards. Their guesthouse is signposted (first left turning). At end of this before going right to continue along boardwalk the guesthouse is on the left. Rooms are tired and a bit grubby. Paint and a good clean...
Read moreI couldn't have had a better experience at John Friends Guest House. The owner, Johna, was so kind to me that it was almost unbelievable. When I fell ill, he served me breakfast in my room and did not even expect direct payment for it. Oh, and his food is good with that Kashmiri bread and tea! : ) But that's just the beginning - when my illness became persistent, he took it upon himself to assign his brother to take me to the hospital personally and to guide me through the whole process since I did not know the local language. Again, payment is not what he or his brother was expecting or looking for. He made sure that I proceeded with a successful recovery and he kept his price nice and low throughout, his low prices being another selling point for his guest house. Johna, if you read this review, let me know that you got it, since I promised it to you, and also let me know if there is any other site that I can leave this same review for you. You and your family certainly deserve it. I won't forget...
