While it boasts some positive aspects, particularly in its newer section, there are significant drawbacks that potential guests, especially those with mobility concerns or families, should be aware of. Room Quality & Block Distinction: The hotel has two distinct blocks. The newly constructed block offers good rooms and, crucially, lift facility. This is highly recommended for all guests, particularly those with elderly individuals or children. The older block, however, is a different story. It mainly houses family rooms but lacks a lift and its maintenance is notably poor. Guests have reported persistent water availability issues in the old block, specifically empty water tanks in the mornings, causing considerable inconvenience and delaying sightseeing plans for consecutive days. It is strongly advised to avoid booking any rooms in the old block. When booking, explicitly request deluxe rooms in the new block with lift access. Location - A Misleading Claim: While the hotel states it's "300mts to Mall Road," this is highly misleading. The path to Mall Road involves a steep incline, making it genuinely difficult to walk, especially for old people and kids. Even after navigating the initial 300 meters from the hotel to the market road, guests will still need to walk for approximately 20 minutes to reach Mall Road proper. This significant distance and challenging terrain make daily commutes arduous. Furthermore, driving in these small, steep roads for sightseeing is also difficult, even with a personal car. Overall Recommendation: Considering the issues with the old block's maintenance and water supply, coupled with the inconvenient and misleading distance to Mall Road, the Muscatel Grand Silk Route should be considered as a last hotel if no other suitable hotels are available in the more accessible Mall Road area. While the new block offers better facilities, the overall location challenges remain a significant factor for a comfortable...
Read moreWe stayed at Muscatel Grand Silk Route in Gangtok recently and overall, it was an okayish experience.
The rooms are quite small — decent for the price, but definitely not as good as the overall hotel ambience might suggest. The common areas are nicely done, but once you enter the rooms, the impression drops a bit. The location is good, walkable distance from Mall Road.
We had a last-minute change in our travel plans as Nathula Pass was closed, and we had to head towards North Sikkim. We had originally booked the hotel for 12-13 April, and again for 16 April. We requested the hotel to shift our 13 April booking to 15 April instead. Despite multiple requests and even though the rooms were vacant, the hotel management was completely unsupportive. Very disappointing, especially because it was a minor adjustment we asked for.
Another big negative was the behavior of the lady managing the restaurant by name Marmit. She was extremely rude and made us feel like we were an inconvenience rather than welcomed guests.
One very serious concern: the bathroom windows. In the room we stayed in, the bathroom window had a clear peep hole — outsiders could see inside easily! Thankfully, we noticed it in time and reported it to the reception. One of the staff members Aanchal (the only helpful one during our stay) quickly put up black polythene as a temporary fix. Shockingly, they claimed they hadn't realized this issue before.
The manager, Manoj, was also accomodating to our requests and was quite helpful.
Overall, it was not the best experience. The property has potential if the management works on their customer service and fixes basic safety and privacy issues. Until then, I would recommend staying here only if you have no...
