Eviva dei Capitani! Wow, this is such an amazing hotel! I stayed here with my partner and kids (10 and 8) with two other family groups.
The rooms are clean and stylish, and very roomy, with air conditioning. Ours was a family room with a mezzanine level opening onto the traditional Tuscan tiled and beamed roof. Staff were delightful. The views are incredibly - every morning we woke up to cloud inversion in the valley and as we enjoyed our delicious breakfast on the terrace, we could see the gorgeous scenery with poplar and cypress stretching into the distance.
Parking is easy, with an accessible drop off point right outside the hotel then free parking a short walk away; the hotel provides 24-hr parking certificates (included in the price of your stay), which you need to display in your vehicle.
The kids loved the pool, which is a good size and lets you enjoy the view as you swim. Montalcino itself is an absolute gem, as are the surrounding towns and villages. Siena in easy reach for a day trip.
I would recommend the nearby St Antimo Abbey which is an exquisite building in a calming, restful valley. I hope to come back to this wonderful...

Where do I even start… The hotel looks like it’s been stuck in a time warp since 1987. The rooms are so old-fashioned that I’m pretty sure the furniture personally witnessed the fall of the Roman Empire. And then there’s the eternal Italian mystery: Why do they hate duvets? Instead of a normal blanket, you get the classic sheet-and-blanket combo that turns you into a badly rolled kebab at 3:27 in the morning. I missed my duvet more than a Dane misses rye bread on holiday.
The staff? Friendly enough… if you define friendly as “silent as a cat in church.” They smile, they nod, but if you expect conversation, forget it. I said “good morning” at reception, and the lady looked at me like I’d just insulted her entire family and called her uncle a Fiat Panda.
Breakfast? Let’s just say “continental breakfast” is apparently Italian code for dry bread, a slice of cheese, and juice squeezed from a retired orange. I left the dining room full, but mostly of disappointment.
And yet – the view. My god, the view! The Tuscan landscape spreads out in front of you like God himself said: “Here, my friend, here you may forgive the sheet trauma.” Sit by the pool, dip your toes, and you’ll feel like an Italian movie star… until you have to go back to your room and wrestle with that damn sheet again.
Conclusion: If you want luxury, service, and a proper duvet – stay somewhere else. If you want rustic charm, jaw-dropping views, and a funny story for later, Hotel dei Capitani is just perfect.

Men – udsigten.
Read moreI had a wonderful stay at this place. The location is absolutely perfect – just a short walk from the historic center of Montalcino, but far enough to enjoy peace and quiet. The view from the terrace and pool is breathtaking – classic Tuscan hills, vineyards, and cypress trees as far as the eye can see.||My room was clean, comfortable, and had everything I needed. It wasn’t overly modern, but that added the charm. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful – they gave great recommendations for local restaurants and wineries.||Breakfast was fresh and tasty, with plenty of options, and the coffee was excellent. The outdoor terrace where you can eat is a real highlight. ||Also private parking was a thing! ||Overall, a fantastic experience – peaceful, beautiful, and very authentic.
