ADDENDUM: The restaurant responded to my review by accusing me of submitting a false review, in reliance on the asserted fact (unknown to me, as I visited Montalcino in May, 2023) the restaurant to which I referred in my review, Terra, closed some months ago. The restaurant mistakenly assumed my review (which I only today discovered was not published when I originally wrote it, last year, because of my use of a bit of profanity) was based on a recent visit, not my visit to the restaurant in May, 2023. As the attached photos from Alle Logge di Piazza and my dinner at Terra later that evening verify, I DID visit both establishments that evening. What is it about Montalcino? Do its denizens go to New York for training? I encountered more rudeness there in 24 hours than I did in all of Italy in the course of three mostly fantastic weeks in that beautiful, albeit benighted, country. Yet again, I have dealt with it from afar.
Review based on visit to Montalcino in May, 2023:
The restaurant I had intended to visit, Terra, was not yet open, yet I was very hungry. So, as it was listed as open on Google, I diverted to Allé Loggia.
The dining room was not open, however. So, I waited for it to open while seated for an hour or so at a table in the foyer/kitchen area.
They seemed baffled and annoyed that I was solo, and seemed to prefer I leave (not stopping to consider I might likely spend as much as a couple on wine and dinner, given my size and appetite).
When finally assisted, I ordered a glass of local wine, which was extremely sparingly poured (a half-glass anywhere else) despite the very high price, as well as an appetizer. Both were very good, but nothing extraordinary.
From my observation of the chef in the adjacent kitchen, however, I gained the impression I was in for an excellent meal, and so waited patiently.
However, although they knew quite well that I had been waiting for a table in the dining room, the staff refused to give me one upon its opening, despite the ready availability of a large number.
They refused to serve me unless I remained at the rough wooden table against the wall by the kitchen, suitable for a quick drink and snack, but not for an expensive meal. I was deeply offended, paid my tab, and left.
I then went to Terra, my first choice, and a significantly more elegant venue. There, I received a very warm welcome from the staff, and was treated to superb service and cuisine.
The rudeness of the staff at Allé Loggia was in complete contrast to the warm welcome and superb service, as well as excellent cuisine, I experienced (despite also dining solo) at Terra and Re Macchia in Montalcino [or at any other restaurant in which I dined in Siena, San Gimignano, Pienza or Montepulciano during my week in Lower Tuscany (after two weeks spent with my wife in Venice, Florence, and Upper Tuscany, e.g., Bolgheri, Greve, Lucca)].
Indeed, in addition to comparable rudeness I also encountered at La Taverna de Baietto in Montalcino (which seems to produce more unpleasant people per capita than other towns in the Val d'Orcia) this was among the only extreme rudeness I experienced during three otherwise marvelous weeks in Italy.
For all I know, the main courses are indeed excellent. I am hard pressed to believe it is better than at other restaurants in Montalcino or Tuscany operated by pleasant people who deserve to have a...
Read moreI had the pleasure of dining at Alle Logge di Piazza during my recent trip to Montalcino, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The standout feature of this restaurant was undoubtedly the amazing service provided by our server, Fabio. His recommendations for both food and wine were impeccable, and he made our dining experience truly memorable. In fact, the service at Alle Logge di Piazza was the best we encountered during our four days in Montalcino.
We enjoyed our lunch so much that we decided to return for dinner, and once again, we were blown away. The food was exquisite, the wine selection was extensive and of the highest quality, and the ambiance was delightful. Furthermore, it was a delight to meet the owner, Simone, who greeted us with warmth and made us feel like part of the family.
Overall, our experience at Alle Logge di Piazza was fantastic. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Montalcino. Grazie mille for a truly memorable...
