SLEEEP Fuji — Hotel in Fujinomiya

We chose this hotel based on its high rating on Google Maps. Frankly, I don’t understand how it got that rating. Even a two-star hotel can be well maintained — which is definitely not the case here. So many things are in urgent need of repair and replacement! The only table here is broken, the wallpaper is peeling off in multiple places, the window is cracked, the vent and fan are dirty, and more.

Another major issue is the complete lack of proper insulation. All the windows are single-pane, and it's only 5–7°C outside. The two air conditioners are barely managing. But the most uncomfortable part is using the toilet: one of the louver blades in the jalousie window is missing, so the temperature in there is basically the same as outdoors.

On top of that, there are no curtains or blinds, which means you can’t darken the room for sleeping. If you’re sensitive to light and can’t sleep once the sun comes up — good luck.

Interesting concept. Execution was a bit lacking for me unfortunately. I think sounds proofing in pod could be improved as I could often hear the crossing sounds from outside and other guests moving in bed. Using cheaper, sustainable, minimalist materials for the build is a good idea, but improvements in functionality could be improved. I liked the technology in the pod but there was only 2 regular USB ports, these days many devices use USB-C so perhaps a generic power point would allow customers to use their own chargers. The place is smelly both in the lobby and in the sleeping space. Sometimes I think they cook on the first floor (their staff’s kitchen is on the lobby floor) and it smell like food there. There was no good ventilation.

The room I stayed was not dirty but it’s not super clean. The room smelled like damp cloth. I think it’s because there is no way the sunlight could come in and there is not way that air can flow out and in the room.

The shower room was ok but there there was a lot of body hair on the floor. The shower room and the toilet look like no one has scrubbed it for a long time.
