Staying at this ryokan was truly the realization of a long-held dream. From the moment I arrived, I felt warmly welcomed. Check-in included a lovely snack and tea that set the tone for the rest of my stay.
The highlight was undoubtedly the private outdoor bath attached to my room, offering a serene and immersive onsen experience in complete privacy. In addition, the ryokan features three reservable private baths (first-come, first-served) and a beautifully maintained communal bathhouse, giving plenty of options to relax and unwind.
The food was exceptional. The multi-course kaiseki dinner and traditional Japanese breakfast were both delicious and beautifully presented. I appreciated how the menu shifted with seasonal ingredients, showcasing the chef’s attention to detail and freshness.
Another wonderful touch was the generous selection of snacks and drinks available throughout the ryokan, including alcohol. There was a convenient snack room on my floor, as well as a more extensive lounge in the basement. Spa treatments were also available, adding to the luxurious and restorative feel of the stay.
This ryokan was clean and truly captured everything I hoped for in a traditional Japanese inn with hospitality, tranquility, and a deep connection to nature and culture. I wouldn’t hesitate to return.
Some former guests complained about the steep incline up to the ryokan. It might be a bit difficult for those with mobility issues.
There is also a cable car that goes from Hakone Yumoto station to Gora station, and from there, it is three minute walk to the ryokan. It won’t show up on your Google...
Read moreWe stayed in a Garden View Japanese Style Twin Room, and it was much too spacious for 2 people (it was probably more spacious than most 1-bedroom units in Tokyo!). We loved it! It was clean and cozy. We had our own private bath, a balcony looking out over at trees (not really a garden, but still greenery), a small living room, and twin beds. I especially loved that the room came with a drip coffee set (coffee beans, grinder, dripper, pot), which was great to enjoy in the morning. I loved the smell of the room (I didn't ask, but smelled "woody", herbal, tatami, all blended together). My only minor issues was that the bath was too hot (need to let it cool a bit before soaking in) and that there was only 1 pillow per bed (we probably could have asked for more).
There were also 3 private baths you could enjoy, and it's good for people who want to having a "semi"-outdoor onsen experience ("semi" since it's still enclosed but half the ceiling is open). I recommend going in the early morning before breakfast, as there's almost no waiting time at all during that time (we could literally hop from one private bath to the next, as there was no one else). The other best time to go is during dinner time, when everyone else is having dinner (I think most people went after dinner, and at that time, better to use the private bath in your room instead).
We didn't get dinner there, but we did opt-in for the breakfast, and it was luxurious and delicious. I recommend trying both the Japanese and the Western style. Make sure to go in hungry, as there's quite a...
