My partner and I enjoyed a really lovely night stay at Guest House Tommy. We paired our one-night stay here with a one night stay at a nearby Temple, which worked out delightfully. Staying two nights at a temple was not in our budget, but one night in koyasan would not have been enough time to really see the whole town. I can't say enough good things about the husband and wife that run Guest House Tommy. Upon check in our hosts gave us detailed and in-depth advice about the town, and even provided us with a wonderful town map marked with the recommended sites and restaurants. We were offered coffee or tea as well at check in, and had some lovely conversation about our travels, both hosts speak quite good English as well. Our room was very solid for what it is, and larger than other similar rooms. Good Japanese style shower/bath, two good western-style beds. The hosts were helpful throughout our short stay, offering to hold our bags a few extra hours after checkout, providing umbrellas and generally helping with our questions. The 200 yen breakfast was similarly excellent. Part of me thinks that they offer the breakfast essentially at cost (I'm almost sure it costs them as much to provide) simply as a friendly courtesy and to have another chance to interact with the guests, which they clearly enjoy. I would absolutely...
Read moreLovely and convenient guesthouse for seeing the main attractions on Koya-san. It is a 2 minute walk down the lane from the Odawara-dori bus stop. Tommy and his wife were helpful and friendly, and provided suggestions for sightseeing and dining in town. They also offered us tea and coffee upon our arrival at their cafe around the corner, which was a pleasant personal touch. We stayed in the triple room, which was very spacious, comfortable and clean for the two of us as a couple, but might feel a bit squishy for 3 adults. A couple plus a child would fit comfortably in that room. The unit appeared to be newly-renovated, and had its own heating/AC unit. There is a separate entrance so you can come and go at night without bothering anyone (in case you want to walk to the Okunoin after dark etc). Excellent value if you want to see Koya-san but don't want to spend a lot staying at a...
