Our family of 4 (boys 7 & 15) was very fortunate to book Hotel Kado at the very last minute for a 3 night stay in Kyoto. We were blown away by the hospitality and charm of the brand new hotel. The room was quite spacious and modern too, but still had the Japanese touches like a raised large tatami floor for the living room area however instead of cushion to sit on our room had with three cute bean bags chair. A plus is The was no shortage of outlets and USB ports so our kids to could charge their devices and veg-out after a long day of sight seeing. The tatami floors doubled a secondary sleeping area, the hotel provided two tatami mats (twin size) that comfortably slept our boys. ||The bed was huge, is was essentially two double beds pushed together. The mattress was firm which seems typical based on the other places we stayed at in Japan, nevertheless my wife and I slept comfortably. |Again... there was USB outlets on both sides of the bed.||I must mention that Kado provided four sets of white PJs that were quite comfy.||Hotel Kado provided a washer/dryer combo in the bathroom. Like other places in Japan there was a separate wet room that contained a shower and a full size wooden tub. ||We did make use of the kitchenette everyday that we stay at Kado. There was a grocery store a couple block away and convenience store directly across the street. The kitchen was stocked with bottle water and green tea. At the opposite side of the intersection was a little coffee stand call mamebaco that would highly recommend.||Location wise, the hotel was right beside the Imperial Palace, Nijō Castle was 10-15 minute walk and Marutamachi station is right outside the building. It is only four stops to Kyoto station. There is bus across the street that can take you to Gion and the Yasaka shrine.||We visited Kyoto is early August and it was quite warm and humid the A/C was on non-stop and was quiet. We did take advantage of the rooftop patio one evening which was an unexpected bonus. It was nice to un-wine with a glass of wine and stare at the moon whiles the kids enjoyed the wifi.| |We can honestly say, the thing our family loved the most about Kyoto...

Read moreI can't speak highly enough of this hotel! The room I stayed in was a blessing. The kitchen included a moderately large fridge/freezer for a hotel, the view from my room was of the city block around Marutamachi Station, the room has a mini garden, a washer/dryer single unit, a large closet, a Japanese style shower room complete with wooden tub to soak after you're clean, and the friendliest bilingual staff I've ever had in a hotel (I've been to many from 1 star to 5 star, so this says a lot)!
When checking in, the front desk girl showed me to my room, gave me a tour, explained how some of the things only labeled in Japanese worked, and gave me a heads up on how to power the room with the key card. Incredible.
The experience in room is good, with only minor inconveniences. The AC goes down to 19C if you're like me and prefer cold, window curtains are blackout, the pressure on the bidet is strong (variable according to your settings), the shower is hot with excellent water pressure, the washer/dryer unit is quiet, the tub is big enough for even a 300lbs guy like me, and I can't hear any neighbors.
The only complaints I have are that I can hear the walk chime from the street below, but that's only a problem until around 10pm, and the beds aren't comfortable if you like sleeping on a cloud. While the beds have power and USB ports for charging, they're hard as a rock (standard for Japan) and the pillows aren't better. The thick futon-esque comforters cushion this more than enough to soften it up, so this isn't a major complaint for me.
This is MUCH better than a certain U---O Inn I stayed at in Kanazawa that you can reference my other review for. I would stay here again without hesitation (though I might bring my own...
