Located on the west side of Imperial Palace of Gosho ( Karasuma-simodachiuri ) in Kamigyo-ku is a place where a god of academic achievement is enshrined. The God is Sugawarano Michizane who is a prominent figure in the history of Japan for his deligence of learning. His intelligence gained a high-ranking position in the court. Today he is revered in Shinto as the god of learning in the name of Tenman or Tenjin. This Sugawara-in Tenmangu Shrine is the former site of his residence over three generations from his birth.
