We had the most wonderful experience staying in the Japanese Garden Suite at Brad's house! Communication before we arrived was excellent and Roxana was so helpful and welcoming! Roxana was waiting for us and welcomed us into the beautiful traditional Machiya. Photos are absolutely accurate to the beauty of this house. The place was immaculate and beautifully decorated. It is the perfect mix of traditional and modern. We loved the little atrium between the dining room and bedroom. Also the shower and bath in particular were fantastic! We were four people and the western bed and Japanese futons was so comfortable! We had ample space and all the amenities were in perfect working order. The location is unbelievable - You are right in the centre of Gion and within walking distance to Geiko district and the Yasaka Shrine. The buses are also just around the corner, which you can take all over the city - the no 100 and 206! We simply cannot wait to return!! Holiday rental of a lifetime! Thank you both so much...
Read moreA great little spot, my partner and I only stayed for one night however, on the lower floor 1F (Garden suite, upper floor is the Temple Garden View Suite).
Some points of note; Basically completely central to all things in and near Gion, including Ninenzaka, Gion Station, Ghibli Store, Shrines and other notable landmarks in eastern Kyoto. Still a decent walk or train ride to other parts of Kyoto as expected.
A good sized, soft bed for two people with 5 soft pillows in the house (2 on the bed, 3 spare for 3 spare foutons). Foutons are available for the main room if you need extra space. Like many traditional Japanese guesthouses, pretty thin walls and can hear the other guests in the building.
Decently priced, no breakfast or dinners included and not much complimentary in the fridge. Washer/dryer also in the apartment.
Overall, pretty happy with our experience, we'll definitely make an effort to come back...
Read moreThe Machiya Maya Garden suite was absolutely beautiful to stay in! Located on the second floor, and with an outdoor deck separating the kitchen from the main bedroom (and bathtub) it feels like you're in the treetops! The home itself is definitely older and very traditional so I wouldn't recommend for people with kids who might damage the delicate wood of doorways and floor (or those with lots of luggage!) It wasn't an issue at all for us, but it should be noted that there is not staff at reception beyond your check-in time. However, we did have great communication & quick responses through email when we had a question regarding luggage on the day...
