Oudon Izakaya Mannaka Tsururu — Local services in Kyoto

After walking the Gion district we were heading back to catch a bus and saw this unassuming little shop. We saw in the front window the Owner making fresh Udon noodles, which was enough to get us inside. I went for the featured Udon bowl with beef tendon and pork belly. My son chose a Curry bowl, very fragrant and spicy delicious. My wife had the Pork Tuskegee Udon with Onsen egg (we all ordered an extra egg, soft boiled). She also ordered an extra side of pork belly we all shared. The udon had a great bite to it, soft outside with a firmer inner texture. The pork broth was clean and simple, with a few sprouts and a mound of seaweed. This was not only the best Udon I’ve had during our now near month in Japan, it may be the best meal I’ve had anywhere in the country so far. I could not recommend this place...

Cute and clean udon place with fast service, I’d give it a 3.5 but my partner gave it a 4. We got the dipping udon, kitsune udon, and ham katsu. It came out so quickly! The broth for the kitsune udon was pretty light, savory, and tasty. The dipping udon had some thin beef or pork, seaweed, green onions, onsen egg, and chili oil. The dipping noodle was good but not amazing. The udon noodles themselves were good, like better than supermarket for sure, but still could be springier and chewier. The ham katsu was fresh, and the ham was thick. Overall good but not amazing food at decent price (abt 1400Y per person, udon ranges from 850Y-1100Y pretax). Very limited and select hours. Right outside of accommodation @ Hotel Gion Ichirin Kyoto and noticed that on our first 2 days there, they were closed but opened on the Wednesday.

All female staff. The wait was short but expected in a very small dining location. Super polite staff, spoke a bit of English, efficient and made sure you were having a positive experience.

We both had the Kobe beef tendon and pork Udon, as well as a shared plate of friend ham and cheese cake (delicious) and a drink each. They also have 2 specialty soy & and oils, which are fantastic and will be taken home for future use.
