Review – Kyukamura Nikko-Yumoto Hotel
I recently stayed at Kyukamura Nikko-Yumoto, a 4-star ryokan nestled in the peaceful hot spring area of Yumoto Onsen, Nikko. The experience was truly relaxing and immersive, perfect for reconnecting with nature and stepping away from daily stress.
🌿 Location & Atmosphere The hotel sits right next to Lake Yunoko, surrounded by mountains and forests. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking, especially in the early morning mist. I could hear the sounds of nature, and the calm atmosphere made it easy to unwind.
🛏️ Room My room was a blend of Japanese and Western style, spacious and spotless. It had a comfortable bed, a tatami area, and a beautiful view from the window. There was a fridge, kettle, and everything I needed for a comfortable stay.
♨️ Onsen (Hot Spring Bath) One of the highlights was the onsen. Soaking in the outdoor hot spring bath while looking out at the snowy landscape was unforgettable. The water was milky and warm, perfect after exploring the area.
🍽️ Meals Breakfast and dinner were included, served buffet-style. The variety of traditional Japanese dishes was impressive, and everything tasted fresh and carefully prepared. I especially enjoyed the seasonal flavors and local ingredients.
🚶♂️ Surroundings & Activities During the day, I explored nearby nature trails and scenic spots like Yudaki Falls and Lake Yunoko. It’s a fantastic area for light hiking and photography. Afterward, returning to the calm of the ryokan made it feel like a perfect escape.
✅ Final Thoughts Kyukamura Nikko-Yumoto is ideal if you're looking for a quiet retreat with natural beauty, authentic atmosphere, and traditional comfort. I left feeling refreshed and deeply relaxed. I'd...
Read moreHad a great time staying in early Feb here as a couple. As it is off season, the small town was rather quiet. Main attraction is the onsen and some short walks, as longer trails were closed due to the snow. There is also a snow sports area next door, but we didn't try it.
First time staying in Kyukamura and am impressed with the hotel. It is perfectly designed to appreciate the hot springs. There are both western style and Japanese style rooms to choose from. Booking was done via Kyukamura website, and it is easy to call to the hotel to confirm the registration. We got a good price (around 30000 jpy+ per night, including breakfast and dinner) as we were travelling off season and due to discount from booking via website. There are many English speaking staff, who were all very polite and helpful. The hotel provides a shuttle bus to the local bus stop from which you can take the public bus to Nikko Station. In all, it takes about 3 hrs to travel from Tokyo.
Futons were comfortable and the room was spacious and clean. We did not have a shower in the room (each room does have a toilet and sink however) but it is not an issue as the public baths are very convenient and clean. It is a great experience to soak in the onsen while snow falls around you.
Meals were excellent. Plenty of food, and every item was delicious. There is an option to purchase a bento for lunch, as there is not much food available in the area.
Will hope to come back...

The hotel has a very clean, modern look, and is very well-maintained, unaffected by the fact it locates in a volcanic area, for you can smell sulfur in the air. The provided dinner and breakfast boasts buffet of great variety and quality, especially the sweets. The rooms are moderately spacious and very cozy with great lighting and views. The hotel also provides a stargazing activity depending on the weather conditions, which is educational and fun. Because it’s right beside the lake, you can take a breezy stroll around it in the morning. In all, highly recommended if you want to experience Nikko to the fullest. The only downside is the power extension cord by the bed kept hissing. Remember...
