The Okunikko Kogen hotel is very conveniently located within walking distance to Yunoko Lake and also one can walk to the Yudaki falls from here.||The visitors center and short hiking trail are also all accessible on foot. There is a Shop nearby that sells youkan and it is recommmeded to get there early or to call them and order since they get sold out fast.||Regarding the hotel, the rooms are very spacious and clean. The food service is all in the dining room downstairs. The dinner Kaiseki was amazing with very tasty and good quantity of food.||Breakfast buffet is also substantial.||There are two spas in the hotel. They have both have similar layout with one internal hot bath and one external bath. One is supposed to have more sulfur content than the other. The spas could use a little renovation and upgrade.||The spa annex is very conveniently connected to the rooms by an access way.||The staff is mixed, some Japanese and some Chinese and Indian. This reflects the new reality in the hospitality business in Japan as there is a labor shortage. But this also helps the foreign guests to get good assistance if they cannot speak Japanese.||All in all, this was a good getaway from Tokyo.||Hotel also has ample...
Read moreOkunikko Kogen Hotel is at Yumoto Onsen, 90 minutes' bus ride from Nikko station.||The rooms have been newly renovated, but poorly designed. We had the room which included "bunk beds", presumably a family room. However the "bunks" are essentially a low hanging cupboard on which we frequently hit our heads. There were only 2 of us in the room. If there had been 4, I am sure the accident rate would increase exponentially due to poor furniture placement.||For the rate that we paid, we received adequate but mass-produced meals - quite a disappointment, given that it was NOT cheap, and not in a premium location either. To add insult to injury, all meals were in the dining room (more like a mess hall), and you had to serve yourself for rice, soup, tea and pickles at dinner. Breakfast is buffet style, with ordinary selections. ||Poor...
Read moreI lived in Japan for 5 years and visited the Nikko on regular "weekend breaks". Recently we returned for a quick tour of Japan and stayed here, the rooms were great (Traditional tatami style) the onsen sulphur baths both inside and outside were good. The meals were exceptional, they have some dog friendly rooms available if that's your thing. The only thing I would say I think this is more geared to Japanese guests as only a few of the staff seemed to speak English. However I would recommend getting meal sets included, this was probably the best Japanese traditional eating experience I remember having, they also do a great Sake tasting set to accompany your...
