We were thoroughly disappointed in the accommodation especially after one of the longest days of our hike. This was booked through our travel agent and we were so dissatisfied in having to stay for two days that we actually moved to a different accommodation. The room smelled of smoke, the TV was coin operated and the facilities were dirty-- I could only find soap in one of the sinks around the accommodation!||||When we arrived we saw our luggage left in front of the door, and having such a wonderful experience in another minshuku the night before, we expected the same service and experience. However, we had to lug our own luggage upstairs to our room (which we're normally fine with, but thought it was the norm to have it sent to our room) which the owner insisted that we hoist them into the closet. After hiking 23 km in 34 degree heat you can imagine how even that task seemed a bit daunting. We weren't given much of a tour of the place and was left to our own devices. We only saw the host when serving dinner and breakfast. ||||The shower was pretty grimy-- there was mould and it was dark and dank. There were barely any amenities and the soap and/or shampoo wasn't labeled so I just guessed. They do have an out door onsen though which I was happy to find. Again, having hiked so many hours in extreme heat I wasn't too happy about the gross shower I had to take. I've stayed in some pretty bad hostels and I would say this is probably just a step above with the price tag of something that should be much nicer. ||||The reason I'm giving it 2/5 is that the food was good. There are a few other places in Yunomine to stay at so I would probably recommend any other place you might find. I also wouldn't have been so peeved if I knew what I was paying for but this place is definitely not...

Read moreI spent a couple of nights in Yunotaniso and I agree with previous reviewers in that the inn looks and feels old-school, as if out of a Japanese TV show from the early '80s.||||The room was Japanese-style with a futon, pillows and a low table with cushions for seating. A coin-operated TV standing guard over a safety box in a corner table. The sliding door enclosed the spare pillows and duvets for winter.||||Sleep quality was great - the futon was very comfortable. The air-conditioning in the room I was worked really well - and was not coin-operated. Since other reviewers mention this fact, I should assume that the owners are slowly renovating the place with modern equipment.||||The food was delicious - dinner was a fully-featured nine-dish Japanese feast. I was very impressed by the quality of the ingredients. Considering the small size of the Yunomine Onsen village, such an elaborate dinner is a feat in logistics.||||Breakfast was as good and filling, with no complaints.||||During the time I was there I was the only guest, and the manager came to knock on my door to let me know that dinner was served.||||She does not speak English but with a translator app, hand gestures and an occasional smile, we got along well. She showed me the around the inn, the onsen and the facilities, and was courteous. ||||For the price point, it may be expensive for what you get, but the food and the outside onsen were the highlights of my stay -an incredible relief after walking around those mountains in the summer time.||||My take is that it can't get any more traditional and old-school than Yunotaniso. If you are okay with this, then I recommend the...
