HORRIFIC EXPERIENCE — BED BUGS AND COMPLETE NEGLIGENCE. STAY AWAY.
I’ve traveled a lot, and I’ve never had to write a negative review — until now. This was the worst hotel experience of my life, and I feel obligated to warn others.
I discovered a bed bug in my room. Just one — but if you know anything about bed bugs, you know seeing one means there’s likely more, or worse: eggs in the mattress, bedding, or luggage. The situation is serious. Yet the staff treated it like a joke.
I spent two nights unable to sleep, worried and checking all my belongings, because if these bugs got into my clothes or suitcase, they could follow me home. I now have to wash every single item I brought with me — two full suitcases — just to be safe.
When I told the staff, they acted like this was completely normal. The manager was cold, rude, and dismissive. No apology. No real concern. Their only response? "It’s probably just one." Seriously? Do they think bed bugs live alone?
They refused to refund any of my nights and only offered 2,000 yen (about $13) — and only after I insisted — to cover laundry costs. An insult, really.
I called Agoda and they contacted the hotel on my behalf, but the hotel still didn’t care. They claimed they hired a professional to inspect the room — but when I asked for a report or proof, they had nothing to show. No invoice, no document, no evidence. Most likely, they never called anyone. They just wanted me to shut up and go away.
I’m lucky I took a photo of the bed bug as proof. Otherwise, they would’ve gaslit me into thinking I imagined it. But even with that photo, they refused to take action.
This place is a disaster, and the way they handle serious hygiene issues is completely unacceptable. If you care about your health, your belongings, and your peace of mind, do not stay here.
You work hard for your money — spend it at a place that deserves it. Don’t let your vacation turn into a nightmare...
Read moreI stayed in a double room for 5 nights. Firstly I must say it was the best deal I found among all of the hotels in Tokyo in October last year. Although Akabane wasn’t located in the heart of Tokyo, it was only half an hour by train to the popular tourist spots like Shibuya and Shinjuku. And the fact that this hotel was located right next to the Akabane train station, it was convenient for tourists at an extremely affordable price!
Secondly, the room was designed smartly with automatic lightning, and a standing shower room separated from the toilet and washing basin (which I always preferred when visiting Japan).
What I mentioned above were what I expected from looking at the hotel’s website, and also what I experienced during my stay. Now onto something unexpected and what I disliked the most - the size of the room. So the room was extremely, extremely small for 2 persons. I know how small the hotel rooms in Tokyo usually were, but this was another level. I have never been to a double room this tiny! Don’t expect to be able to leave your suitcase out at the corridor as there wouldn’t be any space for you to stand. The desk was too tiny to put stuff for 2 persons too. I felt suffocated needing to do everything on my bed - from reading, eating, watching TV to working on my phone! By the way there was no room for a sitting chair too. I also didn’t like how the air conditioner was directly blowing towards my head so I couldn’t turn it up high, and the room always felt so stuffy and made me drowsy. Naturally I hated staying in the room.
Other than the room, the receptionists needed more hospitality training. Even though I saw many international tourists staying at the hotel, the staff’s English was inadequate. They misinterpreted my booking details and charged my reservation at a higher exchange rate.
Overall, I would only return to this hotel as my last resort when I go to Tokyo again...
