As a couple traveled to Japan for the first time, we were impressed with the website with good pictures of the decoration and architect. However, we were disappointed. We stayed at K's house oasis with similar price range but has own bathroom when first landed at Tokyo location very convenient to the Hybia line of the Minowa station. However, there is nothing in the neighborhood. You have to take the subway or bus to get somewhere. And subways stop running at midnight at Tokyo. So we had to hurry back even though they did not have curfew. And Taxi in tokyo is very expensive The building is new w modern design
room extremely small, just fit a futon for two people and the rest for luggage. no table, no chair. tiny closet w/ a few hangers it has an ac and window we stayed at 2nd floor across from the common bathroom. thus it was noisy w/ guest using it at night time. We spent the first 2 nights at K's house oasis and it was much bigger The pillows were hard at first but surprisingly comfortable there was an old tv but we did not use it
Services the lady owner was nice. we did not participate w/ all the events because going out all day long. The hotel had only a tiny sign which the taxi had difficult time finding. There was no direction from the subway station unlike the k's house. So make sure get good direction esp at night time We checked in around 9 pm. The girl spoke good English. I forgot her name but she was not nice. She promised to switch the room for us the next day but did not service from receptionist not 24 hr only from 8 am to 10 pm Be aware they requested for 2000 yen for deposit for the key ($20) which did not show in the web site. And they requested you return the key the night before if you check out early in the morning. However she did not tell us that. We only found out after seeing the sign when checking out. We dropped the key and the card through the gap of the receptionist "box". But they said that they could not find it. So $20 on top of that. When we asked for direction to the airport, she was not helpful. never smiled. At the k's house, we got the girl printing out the directions for us. We did not use the laundry. The first day, bathroom towers were not changed The common bathroom is so cramped. We have to share w others. It was not dirty however you would not feel comfortable w other people using The stairs are tiny. no elevator. only a lift for luggage. but the instruction was in japanese and not working in early am. We gave up and carried a huge and heavy luggage downstairs
In comparison, K's house oasis is farther from the subway station but better service, roomier, has elevators and your own bathroom. And you may lose $ 20 on...
Read moreWe really loved staying at Andon Ryokan. It’s probably the most unique place I have ever stayed. It’s a very modern structure filled with amazing art work and antiques. It is a family run ryokan and very very friendly. The lovely family live in the ryokan.
We stayed for four nights and by the last night I was still only just noticing some of the beautiful features…… lovely lights in the toilets, beautiful mosaic work, lead lights, original artworks. It was just stunning. I have read reviews comparing Andon to a hostel. That is simply not true. It’s a beautiful space. Yes, I agree that the rooms are very, very small but they are so cleverly designed. Everything in this ryokan is beautifully designed and very comfortable. I have also read reviews criticising the noise level. Guests are asked to be quiet and respectful after 10pm. I think the family do everything they can to keep things quiet and comfortable.
We liked being located in a quieter area. We could easily travel by train to anywhere we chose.
This ryokan is absolutely spotless. Everything is checked and cleaned several times a day, and it is very very clean. We loved the private jacuzzi at the end of each day and the yukatas that were provided.
But what we most enjoyed at this ryokan was the meals. We are three breakfasts and four dinners. Each one was different and absolutely delicious. We stayed here at the end of our Japanese holiday and we ate some very delicious meals in our travels, but the ones prepared for us at Andon Ryokan were by far the nicest meals we had in Japan. Every morning the ingredients are bought fresh from the market. Our meals were home cooked to perfection. Each component of the meal was explained to us. No meal was the same. I enjoyed wine each night.
I really don’t understand why you would eat anywhere else while in Tokyo. Nothing could possibly be as good as the meals we ate in this charming ryokan. We really enjoyed our...
Read moreWe had a fantastic stay at the Andon Ryokan. The prices on their website were less expensive than on other booking sites and offered special promos. Check-in was very easy, and included a free welcome drink and snack. They have fantastic signage about how to get places posted on the walls. So useful. You will need to have 300 yen for a key deposit upon arrival, but you get this back when you check-out without any issues.
Please note that this Ryokan is not located in a busy district. This was part of the appeal to me. You get a feel for another side of Japan, and it gives you a small tastes of local Japanese living style since the rooms are in the traditional bedding style in Japan called yojohan. It's pretty easy subway access to Akihabara (25 minutes or so after all walking/buying tickets/transfer in Ueno) & several other areas, and it was only an hour to the Haneda airport. They hold luggage after check-out, and the private bath experience was pretty incredible.
The rooms are sparse, but they are clean and comfortable. You have your own tv and control of heating unit. The have fantastic Shisheido products for use as well as a hair dryer and slippers for use. We loved that they had hand towels in addition to bath towels.
The Cinnamon Toast breakfast was delicious.
I had been concerned about the shared bathrooms meaning that we would have to wait for a shower, but that was never the case. We were very pleased...
