A mind numbing Experience at Gem Forest Hotel
I visited Gem Forest Hotel on Saturday 12th oct in Nairobi for what I thought would be a relaxing lunch at their rooftop. Unfortunately, my experience turned into a complete disaster from the moment I arrived.
Upon reaching the rooftop, I was informed that there was an event happening with a 2,500 KSh cover charge. This fee, by the way, was non-redeemable, even though we were just having a quick 1.5-hour lunch. We paid it. To make matters worse, the entire time (two hours), the DJ was right next to our table, conducting a sound test for an even they said had already started at our arrival. With only 3 tables occupied. Imagine trying to enjoy a meal with blasting music and speakers being adjusted over and over again. It was unbearable.
As we were leaving, I asked the host if I could give my friend’s event ticket to someone else since he wasn’t coming back, and the event hadn’t even started. They refused. Fine. I decided to come back later with another friend to give the place a fair shot. Big mistake.
We returned, paid for tickets again, and entered. No one even bothered to show us to a table; we had to find one ourselves. After waiting an eternity for menus, we sat for 30minutes trying to catch a waiter’s attention. There were four waiters standing in front of us, chatting away, completely ignoring us. When someone finally approached our table, it wasn’t to take our order – it was to take our menus away!
We explained that we had been waiting forever just to order. So, we ordered a bottle of wine. Guess what? It took another half hour to arrive, and it was the wrong bottle! When we asked for the correct one, it took yet another half hour. We sat there without a drink for so long that we tried to find the manager, but of course, no one could locate him. When we were finally leaving, a line manager showed up, smirked through our entire complaint, and seemed completely indifferent.
Everything was slow. Service, the event, the drinks, valet —nothing went smoothly. It felt like an absolute waste of our Saturday. To top it off, the event (Kusini) was poorly managed, and the representatives were shockingly unprofessional.
In short, this was a horrific experience, and I wouldn’t recommend Gem Forest Hotel to anyone looking for good service or a pleasant time. Total waste of time, money,...

The mojitos were absolutely refreshing—perfectly balanced, with just the right amount of mint and sweetness. But the real highlight was the French cuisine. Every dish was a masterpiece, with rich flavors and impeccable presentation. It was clear that a lot of thought and care went into each course, making it one of the best culinary experiences I’ve ever had.

As a new hotel, there is significant room for improvement, particularly in staff training. At Troy Restaurant, we were served dirty, wet wine glasses, which was disappointing. Upon check-in, we were required to place a room deposit and could only pay for services in cash, which was inconvenient. The pool bar did not serve hot beverages, and we experienced long waits for bills as room charges were not permitted.
While our room was cleaned well, there was noticeable construction dust on the window panes. We were also disturbed by an incorrect food delivery to our room. To add to the frustration, the number provided on the room phone to contact reception was incorrect.
The limited food options were another letdown. Despite having a French/Italian restaurant, Enchant, pizza was not available there. When we decided to order out, we confirmed with the hotel that concierge could deliver the food to our room. However, when the food arrived, a different front office executive informed us we had to collect it from reception, citing an error in protocol.
Unfortunately, these service issues overshadowed the hotel’s positives. On the bright side, the property is tastefully furnished, boasts high-quality fittings, and offers breathtaking views of Karura Forest. However, due to the disappointing level of service, I will not...
