My husband and I got married here at the Wyndham Grand Cancun in October of this year and our day was nothing short of incredible. Planning a destination wedding is a little bit stressful, but the process was made much easier by Ximena, the wedding coordinator at Wyndham. She was incredibly communicative throughout the entire year that we planned the wedding. She was very easy to work with, answered all of our questions and always responded very quickly to any email. We were able to meet in person with Ximena a few months prior to our wedding and she answered many of our questions and organized a menu tasting for the wedding food. Once we arrived in Mexico for the wedding, we met with Ximena again to go over all of the last minute details and the schedule of the day. On the day of the wedding, she helped organize and coordinate the day making sure that everything ran smoothly (and it did). ||From the start of our wedding day everything exceeded our expectations. We were given a bridal villa for myself and my bridesmaids to get ready in for the day. My husband and I chose to have our ceremony on Mirador Terrace which was overlooking the beach. At first, I was a little bit nervous about the privacy of the event because of the close proximity of Mirador Terrace to the pools in the resort. However, at 5:30pm the pools are mostly empty and the staff did an excellent job of blocking off access to our ceremony. Immediately after the ceremony our guests were able to go over to La Vista restaurant where our cocktail hour and reception were both held. (I would recommend this indoor option for a wedding due to the privacy and also in October it gets very buggy outside after the sun went down.) We were able to rent the space for the night for an additional cost. When we got over cocktail hour we were blown away by how they had transformed the restaurant into a beautiful wedding venue. Everything had been decorated beautifully and everyone fit comfortably at the cocktail hour tables. The staff quickly took out the cocktail hour tables when it was time for the reception to begin. Dinner was served quickly and the food was excellent. The staff accommodated kids meals, allergies and a vegetarian without any problems. The only down-side is that we had to pick out one entree for all of the guests to have (as opposed to the guests choosing a chicken, beef or veggie option). However, we chose the surf and turf option which was a crowd pleaser and our guests loved the food. Manuel was our DJ from Digital Sound which was recommended to us by Ximena. We provided him a playlist for dinner and then for the party and he kept the dance floor going all night long. I can't say enough good things about the wait staff and the bartenders as well. Every time I turned around there was a tray of tequila shots going to another table. We opted for two welcome drinks: watermelon mezcal with a tajin rim, and a pineapple coconut drink with rum. Both were served all night and our guests raved about them both. |The entire night went exactly according to plan, it was exactly how we pictured it. Everything about our wedding night was perfect and it was all brought to life by Ximena and the staff at Wyndham Grand Cancun. |If you're thinking of doing a destination wedding, you cannot go wrong choosing this venue!!!||Just a couple things to note: |1. I have a pretty large immediate family (parents, siblings/spouses) and making dinner reservations to be all together was impossible unless we ate at the buffet. The restaurants only accommodate up to six people per reservation. If my husband and I wanted our families to eat dinner together, (15 of us total), our only option was the buffet. |2. We asked to do a rehearsal of the ceremony the night before the wedding. Ximena did accommodate a rehearsal, however it just ended up being the wedding party going out to the terrace and the terrace still had lounge chairs out with people sitting in them. So we weren't able to rehearse the ceremony as bridal parties normally do. Though I do think they would have accommodated this request if we had been clearer.|3. I mentioned this above but, you have to pick one entree for all of your guests to have. If you choose the beef option, you also have to choose one temperature for all of the guests. We chose the surf and turf cooked medium-well and it was a...
Read moreI would like to share my top reasons why I will NOT be returning to Wyndham Grand Cancun Resort and Villa AND why as a Travel Agent I will not recommend this resort to fellow travelers.
Our stay was from June 2nd-7th 2025. We arrived at the resort and was instantly greeted by a warm receptionist in the lobby and was escorted to a sitting area to collect our personal information. We then asked if we were interested in becoming "members" of the Wyndham family. We politely declined and it was from that moment I realized the front desk management attitude changed from friendly to condescending and rude.
Check-in After paying the $25 extra charge for taxes and were then told we had to wear wristbands and if the wristband are lost we would need to pay $100. I thought that was a bit absurd price to pay for a piece of plastic but, nevertheless we had to sign a contract to receive wristband and agree about the replacement cost. I would like to add, I have visited many all inclusive resorts throughout the Caribbean and not once we had to sign a "wristband contract."
Villa We were a party of 6, 5 adults and 1 child. The Villa with three bedrooms and 3 and half baths was spacious. The villa provided enough space for everyone to be comfortable. However, the Villa had a black ant problem that infested my sister's and son's room. They were also spotted in the kitchen and dinning area. Furthermore, the furnishings of the villa were dated and needing some repairs. The sofa needed a deep clean. Lot of stains on it. My headboard in my room and my parents room definitely have seen better days. The beds were rock hard, that made sleeping uncomfortable. The pillows were thin as well. Housekeeping did a phenomenal job keeping the villa cleaned on a daily basis. Shout out to Ms. Rosalie.
Food and Drink Buffet food was not pleasant. The food at the steak house was disgusting. I left hungry and disappointed. The alcoholic beverages taste watered down. Some of the staff that worked the pool area were a bit rude most were not. The wings and fries by pool side were tasty. My brother in law mentioned the sushi was good.
Kids Club Shout out to Ms. Samantha for ensuring my son had a memorable experience. He enjoyed the kids club and the kid area.
Wristband Scam. BIGGEST REASON NEVER TO RETURN! June 4th, while visiting the Xacret Park my wristband fell off. Ms. Gabriella at the front desk put on herself. When we return to the resort I went to the front desk and explain the situation and immediately was told there was nothing they could do, I have to pay the $100. When I refuse, the a manager came out. My sister explained her wristband pop off and needed to be replace and my dad wristband pop off while just sitting at dinner. The wristband were flimsy and the clamps were weak making it easy for them to just pop apart. The night of June 4th around 10pm the manager told me I should have been "careful" and I should have went back to the park to retrieved it; granted it was 10pm (no regard to my safety and wellbeing). I told the manager that night I refuse to pay for a piece of defective plastic. Then he said, he would call the authorities on me to remove me from the property if I don't pay the $100. I walked away without paying and still enjoyed the amenities I paid for, for the duration of my stay. I deem the wristband replacement fee is just another setup to bleed more cash out of innocent guests to fatten Wyndham pockets. The front desk management including attitude and posture was antagonizing, rude and disrespectful.
Overall The resort is modest, clean and organized. The villa needs rails for stairs for elderly guest. Staff around resort mostly friendly and courteous. Front desk management needs more training in customer care services. Wristband policy is terrible and needs to be changed. Kid Clubs needs hourly cleaning with safe products. Ms. Samantha needed a extra pair of hands for support and breaks. Food/drinks wasn't 4 or 5 star quality more...
Read moreWe have stayed at four different resorts in Cancun, all within the hotel zone. Out of these, Wyndham Grand Cancun would rank as our least favorite and, in our opinion, feels closer to a 3-star property. Several guests we spoke with mentioned that before it was rebranded as Wyndham, the resort offered better food options and higher overall quality. Some even noted that staff are encouraged to write positive reviews, which might explain the higher ratings online.
Property Atmosphere and Cleanliness: The property feels a bit dated overall. While it’s clear some upgrades have been made to the rooms, the indoor areas left much to be desired. The low ceilings and unusual layout made the interiors feel cramped. On the other hand, the outdoor facilities were enjoyable, offering several pools to suit different preferences, outdoor dining areas, food service by the pools, and a beach bar with plenty of seating. The beach itself was well-maintained, relatively free of seaweed (thanks to a morning tractor service), and swimmable during our stay in mid-April. Overall, the resort grounds were kept clean and tidy.
Staff: The staff at the main pool were outstanding. Whisky and his team created a fun atmosphere, especially for kids and teens. Our teenager loved participating in activities like pool basketball, volleyball, and various competitions. The team made an effort to learn the kids' names and engage with them daily, although the activities seemed more geared toward a younger crowd. The bartenders at the pool and lobby bars were also fantastic—friendly, attentive, and took pride in their work. However, many other staff members appeared tired, disinterested, and not particularly welcoming. They did not go out of their way to enhance the guest experience. For instance, when we arrived, we inquired about a room upgrade. As a "VIP" member through Expedia, we were eligible for a free upgrade if available. The concierge showed us a beach view room but then informed us it would cost an additional $100 per night. When I pointed out the free upgrade benefit, he simply said, "when available"—even though he had just shown us the available room. Tired and hungry from a long day of travel, we chose not to argue and stayed in our original lagoon-view room. We also mentioned we were celebrating our son’s 16th birthday (the trip was a gift purchased in advance), but this acknowledgment was met with little more than a laugh and no further effort from the staff.
Room: The room itself was clean and nicely updated. However, there was a strong, somewhat unpleasant smell that hit us immediately. While humidity often causes this in Mexico, other resorts we’ve stayed at made more effort to keep guest areas smelling fresh. The main lobby had a pleasant scent, but the hallways and rooms did not.
Food: Unfortunately, the food was the biggest disappointment of our stay. Despite reading many positive reviews beforehand, we found it subpar compared to other 4-star resorts. The buffet, pool snack restaurant, daytime Mexican restaurant, and sushi restaurant were the best dining options. However, the three restaurants requiring reservations—DaVinci (Italian), Pina Colada (Mexican/fusion), and La Vista (Brazilian steakhouse)—all had limited menus and low-quality food. We appreciated that Pina Colada offered a kid-friendly menu, which was crucial for our picky 7-year-old. Still, convenient food options for children were lacking. We also missed the flexibility of bringing food poolside, a convenience we’ve enjoyed at other resorts. Overall, we were very disappointed with the dining experience.
Final Thoughts: While there were some highlights—especially the beach, pools, and a few outstanding staff members—the overall experience at Wyndham Grand Cancun fell short of our expectations. It is clear that Wyndham does not take pride in quality, but only cares about their own costs. If you are considering a stay, we recommend keeping your expectations low, particularly regarding the food and general...
