Rene and Mario are the ideal hosts at what may be the ideal place to stay in Mérida. (We haven't stayed in them all, so we can't be sure.)||This small B&B (3 rooms) is about 30 minutes (for us slow walkers) from Plaza Grande. This is a benefit for several reasons: (1) it ensures we'll get regular exercise; (2) it's in a quiet neighborhood; and (3) not being hampered by the extreme pressure exerted on more centrally-located real estate, they can situate their rooms around a large pool, meticulously maintained, in a large garden setting, with lots of shade trees. We found ourselves retreating to this oasis with gratitude, every day.||They provided an information guide with lots of valuable suggestions. It's only a short walk to Paseo de Montejo, a broad avenue lined with restaurants, shops, and at least one fascinating museum, the Regional Museum of Anthropology, housed in the historically significant Palacio Cantón (don't miss their café). Their restaurant/bar recommendations were especially welcome. Otherwise, we may not have discovered Holoch, a dark-paneled, high-ceilinged restaurant dedicated to the glories of corn, or Dzalbay, a jazz club a short walk from the B&B. They offer an ever-changing roster of musicians, 7 days a week. Toward the end of our stay, our waiter welcomed us with, "The usual?"||I could go on, but I can't end without mentioning Mario and Rene's breakfasts. Every morning we were treated to a plentiful serve-yourself buffet: a variety of fresh fruit (including a new one for us--mamey), yogurt, home-made granola and jam, toast, eggs, lots of coffee, which we ate outside on the patio with other lucky guests.||Finally, a couple suggestions: El Apapacho, a small restaurant with patio seating, a short walk from Casa Magu, and Bistro Cultural 66, on the same block as Casa Magu. Most mornings, at 10:30, musicians perform on their back patio, under awnings, surrounded by varied murals, and the...

They always made us feel at home, are incredibly relaxed, while being discreet and giving their guests the feeling of privacy and romance as well. It is also worth noting that the location is great—centrally located and near so many places we wanted to go. It was...
