Mala Vecindad is a great find at a great price! I would give it 6 stars if that option's available. The staff I met--Luis (Jorge) and Richard (Ricardo) provided excellent service that was just above and beyond. They were polite, fluent in English, and very attentive to my needs. ||||LOCATION:||The location is great! It's about 20 minutes drive from Mexico City International Airport (MEX), but could vary depending on traffic. Metro station Revolucion was less than a minute's walk from the hotel. Convenience store EXXO was right around the corner. There were also lots of shops and street vendors nearby.||||ROOM:||My room was clean and had lots of beer related decors that made me smile. There was also a basket of Mexican candy, which I enjoyed, on the table. Two outlets each with 2 USB slots were on either side of the bed, so that was plenty of outlets for me to charge my electronics. There was a TV in the room but I was out exploring the city most of the time, so didn't have a chance to see what's on it. The room got enough natural light during the day, which was a great plus for me. My bed was nice and comfy--mattress was a good balance of soft and firmness, pillow was good too.||||BATHROOM:||The bathroom wasn't too big but had a toilet, shower stand and sink. My only issue with the sink was that the hot and cold water came out of different faucets, so if I had wanted to get warm water to wash my hands or wet my face towel, it would be impossible (or I would need a container to catch both waters).||||NOISE LEVEL:||My room was very quiet at night. I was surprised to see how quiet it was given the hotel's central location. And no drunk guests shouting in the hallway at night or anything like that, given it's a beer hotel. I had slept well during my entire stay.||||FOOD/BEER:||The food was great! I highly recommend their breakfast. I also had a sandwich on my first night as dinner since I arrived late. I received a complimentary beer that was brewed onsite on my first night. It had cranberry so it has a cute red/rosy color and tasted sweet, and I loved it! The second night I paid 50 pesos for a regular size and just couldn't stop loving it. They also have other beers from Tempus and this other label. I got a Tempus cream stout and I liked it too.||||SECURITY:||At first I was little concerned with the door lock of my room being too simple. But the hotel entrance was locked at all times; people must ring the bell for someone to open the door. I guess that was more secure since the staff would be screening whomever entering the hotel.||||Also, check out the hotel's roof top. It's a great place to have some beer and hangout with friends. A big plus was that they care about sustainability. According to its website, it's the first beer hotel in Latin America. Richard told me that they had just opened 6 months ago, so there's probably not that many to be around yet. If you're looking for a one-of-a-kind hotel, check out Mala Vecindad, whether you like beer or not. I couldn't praise this place enough and would definitely go back next time I'm in...
Read moreI wasn’t really sure what to rate my stay. It was overall not a bad experience. The neighborhood appears a bit rough but its fine. It’s still a bit of a walk to the center but we enjoyed walking and seeing the street vendors and shops. The last night of our stay we went out and when we came back all of pesos were missing from my fiancé’s purse. It was our last night and we lost maybe only 1500-2000 pesos. We informed the staff and they messaged the person who had serviced our room. They said the person was someone of confidence and in the future we can leave our valuables at the front desk if we are afraid of things going missing. I understand that it could have been misplaced by us and was not expecting my money back, my review is just to inform anyone reading that this happened. If you plan on staying here, it is a nice place but I’d be weary of leaving your money in your room.
Edit: Good morning Marla Vecindad Beer Hotel, I appreciate you responding to my review. The two receptionists I had the privilege of getting to know were both very kind, attentive and answered any of our questions. Yes, the release says exactly what you stated about the hotel not being responsible for any lost money. I also did mention it could have easily been our fault. I said that because I wanted to give the staff the benefit of the doubt. I definitely did not, nor do I want anyone to get in trouble for the stolen/lost money. I think it’s incredibly irresponsible for a company to think a waiver mentioning that they are not responsible for what is lost on their property to be sufficient piece of mind for their customers. I left the review to let anyone who might stay here to know what happened. I did not file a police report because it was our last day in MX and it was not worth my time, but if you think that exonerates you and your business you are wrong. I am not trying to blame you the owner, or your staff. I am simply stating what happened and that is the purpose of google reviews, so anyone looking to stay at your property knows the experiences we had. I personally wouldn’t stay here again, but if your feelings are hurt by my review I am sorry you feel that way. Perhaps it would be in your best interest to care when money goes missing from your establishment. Thank you, I hope you continue to improve your establishment and I wish the best for you and...
Read moreIt is absolutely an interesting experience I'm glad I had. But I feel like a couple things are implied by the reviews/photos that weren't my experience.
Most of the decor and part of the name being in English did NOT mean it was widely available at the front desk/etc. Check-in paperwork including terms and conditions I had to sign? Entirely in Spanish with no translation. Jokey "rules" on the keychain/sign in my room were in English though! Not generally a problem with translation apps for communication, but dunno if I signed away my firstborn on check-in.
All the photos of food and drink are probably fine if you're just there on the weekend but I was there mostly during the week when everything was closed--I only got to see the rooftop beer garden and the basement speakeasy once each, they were both nice but hours/days of operation entirely unclear and reviews are probably conflating them with the hotel itself. I liked both and would've loved to spend more time in them.
As for the hotel, 3 stars would be generous. No AC, no screens on the windows, threadbare towels/bedding, no elevator (so the rooftop beer garden is about a 5 floor walkup), no room services (who's fantasy is the coffee/pastry in the room picture in the promotional material?). They have you leave the key at the front desk when you leave for some reason (fine, the keyring thing is huge). You have to ring and wake up the attendant if you come back late in the evening. All that said? It was fine, just know what to expect going in, it's not for everybody. But if you have a sense of adventure and want to save money, here you go.
The neighborhood, never had a problem. There are some homeless and possibly other street life around, but seemed to keep to themselves. While there isn't much (other than an OXXO) nearby it's pretty much the center of everything and I walked to it all--though there was also a subway stop right there.
The photos (including mine) paint a too rosy picture, some reviews a too dire one. It's best summed up by the words:...
